[Closed] Motor Legal Protection - Worth It?

The new insurance rules about existing customers getting at least as good a price as new customers seems to a waste of space. Our LV multicar renewal was £100 more expensive than last years price. I went online, got the quotes and renewed for £150 less, with LV. Added bonus was doing it through GoCompare so got their £250 excess cover which is ace. Time well spent but proves the new law isn't working yet

Anyways, motor legal protection, I've never had it, never used it. It is always there as an option around £28. Is this worth paying for? If so, is it better to buy from a third party (a quick Google suggest cheaper for longer cover but I don't know if the cover is comparable)

Thoughts?

I've always had it, it was described to me as, as much of a 'must have' as windscreen cover years ago, although I've only ever assumed it's value.

As I guess/understand, if you end up in a serious RTC, serious enough to find yourself in court then it covers your legal costs. I'm a reasonably careful driver these days, but in all things, you never know when you might find yourself in court fighting for your lifestyle and liberty either because of a 'momentary lapse' or completely unfairly.

Like any non-mandatory insurance product, it's a gamble. You don't need fully comp, but you probably do have it while your car is worth more than scrap value. I've always had it, (and I'm not generally a fan of loading up policies with optional extras) but never needed to use it so I'm loosing but I reckon someone will be along to tell you how it saved their bacon shortly.

Pay your money, take your choice.

Had it when I started driving many years ago then when I needed to claim it seemed to not be applicable so I've not had it since.

as much of a ‘must have’ as windscreen cover

I would agree with that statement

Very anecdotal but it's a layer of cover I wouldn't want to be without. We're operating, essentially and potentially, very heavy, very dangerous weapons. I want legal cost cover in the very unlikely - but possible - event something goes wrong and is considered by some prosecutor that it is a criminal matter or somehow that you are at fault (remember it's you vs the opposition's lawyers - no moral comes in to it they will go after you no matter what) and suddenly then you REALLY need the legal financial cover..

Driving is very risky, despite how 'everyday' it might seem. Couple that with the litigious world we live in and it's a no brainer. Very low probability, yes, but very big consequences.

Does MLP cover criminal costs? Thought it just covered your costs in a civil claim to recover your excess etc?

After a bit more reading:

Not criminal costs no, so if you drive at recklessly, lose control of your vehicle and kill someone you won't have any help with that, it also won't help you hire "Mr Loophole" to defend you against a massive speeding fine either.

It's the civil damages cases it will help with, but as you're already insured against financial losses... Mostly it seems it for suing people for damages after an accident.

I've also got legal cover with my Household insurance, that covers unsurprisingly legal stuff to do with your home, but importantly (to me anyway) with things being a bit rocky in work, it also covers me for employment legal stuff.

^ no-win, no-fee legal cover for, ahem, free...

My household legal protection covers any legal dispute - cars included - so make sure you read the detail of policy you may already have.

Thanks all. My household insurance is with LV and it looks like the legal protection within that also covers motor, it certainly isn't listed as an exclusion. So it looks like LV were trying to flog me legal cover twice. That Free Motor Legal looks good so have also signed up to that.

I had a feeling that Motor Legal is a bit like the excess cover that hire car companies try to sell you. I've always covered that we my own annual policy which seems to be more reliable and certainly way cheaper. Not sure motor legal is in that same ball park but I am yet to hear from someone who used it and regard it as a lifeline.
