On Monday, a Co op lorry did its' best to mount the back of our car. No one was hurt, but the rear end took a bit of a battering. The driver accepted full liability and I was in his cab when he rang it through to his HQ.

On Tuesday I rang my broker claims line, took it to the dealer for a quote for repairs (it only has 6k on the clock). Everyone seems to want to sort me out a hire car etc and despite passing details of the claims handlers on, the body shop folk said they'd go direct to the insurer etc. All a bit of a nightmare tbh and I now have no idea who is doing what.

Anyway, today I received a letter from the Co Op saying they would cover all expenses for the repair, hire car etc. They would pick up the vehicle from my home etc etc and deal with everything themselves.

So I pass this info on to the claims handler who said not to accept it as they could not help me if the work wasn't up to scratch etc, I could be screwed over and I'd have to deal with it all.

TBH my inclination is to go along with the Co Op because it would be the most simple thing to do.

Any thoughts anyone?

Co-op won't have 'insurance' as such, they just lodge a bond and sort stuff out themselves. Clearly paying umpteen middle men will push the cost of any repair/hire up when they get the final bill.

If it were me I'd go through my insurers - you have a contractual relationship with them that can be enforced. Just handing your car over to a co-op appointed repair place is likely to leave you with less opportunity for getting issues fixed.

Use your insurer, they're telling the truth in that they will wash their hands of the claim and if you're not happy with something it's all you that'll have to do the chasing. Just give your insurer all the details you have and let them do what you pay them for. If the car's off the road you might as well get take the hire car too
