Yep, that looks right - so it's a [i]popular moth[/i] - when it stretched it's wings out it was quite large but i don't think it was anything like 70-100mm across the tips.

No, it's a Poplar Hawk Moth, it's caterpillars feed on Poplar trees.
It might be popular with some birds as an aperitif, however... 😉
