My Discovery failed it MOT on a couple of things among which were two (or three) spots of rust on the chassis
The fail sheet, lists three areas of rust that needed welding in two sections of the test sheet. I can only find two bits that were marked on the chassis with yellow crayon. Can one section be listed twice on the fail sheet?
The fails sheet lists one section in the 'Do not drive until repaired (Dangerous defect) section
Then in the 'Repair immediately (Major defects) section, the description appears a second time along with another description of a second rusty bit.
Panic over. I found the third spot in a dark hard to see/repair corner of the chassis.
OH (used to work in an MOT garage) says it's most likely that it's only two bits that need repaired, with one being listed twice - MOT testers now can't just write what they like, they have to select from a pre-defined list of faults.
Edit: scratch that then!
There is a Sado-Masochistic pleasure in contorting oneself into an impossible space while grinding and welding sparks rain down on you. One patch to go, not bad for 206,000 miles.
Out of curiosity, did you have to trailer it back from the test?
Is that why they're called discoverys?
Always a little unexplored corner to rust?
Trailer it home? No, I drove it back, the biggest concern was the front propshaft UJ which was on the point of collapse. Had it failed it could have taken out the bell housing. Handily there is a Discovery breaker virtually next door to the Council depot where I get my testing done. I picked up a replacement prop shaft for £70, the chap there really knows Discoverys inside out and always has anything I need to keep mine going on the shelf.
How bad was the rust? The sills on my van are getting a bit rotten so it may not go through its next one.
The rust? Not that bad really. I bought the Discovery because it had been fitted with a new rear crossmember and chassis legs which go almost back to the rear axle.
The three rust holes were about the size of a 50p, in awkward to get to spots just ahead of where the big repair had been. It was challenging but rewarding to make up the repair sections and to weld them in. I’ll give the chassis a good coat of Waxoyl. It might help slow the march of the tin worm

Theyl’ll never be short of stock then 🙂
