I have to drop my wife's car in for an MOT tomorrow but cannot find the old certificate. The MOT expires in a couple of weeks, will they still date it for when it expires or will they date it tomorrow if I do not take old certificate?

It’s all online so they will be able to find when the old one expires.

Don’t think you even get a certificate anymore.

No need for the old cetificate it will be updated online. And it will be from when theold one runs out, you can get the Mot a month before the old one runs out and you don't lose any days.

You do not get a cert as such (I think its called a receipt) but keep a hold of it as when I traded the wifes car in they were adamant that they wanted the receipt even though it only had a week to go. ( think I would have had to pay for a reprint if I couldn't supply it)

An Mot is only technically valid as a statement of condition when the test is carried out, so unless the rules have changed, an mot will be dated by the day of the test. Not from when the current one expires so no you don't have anything to gain by getting it tested early.

You can check online or call DVLA to see how long you have left on the current certificate.

The test will be dated on the day, but it can be done up to 28 days early and the renewal date is then a year from the original date. So my car is registered on 29th Jan, is having its MOT on 9th Jan and (assuming a pass) will be valid until 28th Jan 2019

The rules haven’t changed but this is still wrong.

You can test up to a month early and preserve the original renewal date.

So the new MOT can be valid for up to 13 months.
