Middle of April - I'm thinking get it done this week before a lockdown (small local garage) to be safe, as it's needed by my wife who is a keyworker, rather than assume they will relax the regulations like they did in Northern Ireland a few weeks ago when they had a problem?

You can have it done a month early so I'd get it in if you can..

Yeah, I'd get it done ASAP, taking precautions on drop off and pickup. There's a 3 month grace period been put in place for some vehicles, but not private cars

Yeah you might as well, below is from GOV website
You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date
So you won’t lose out at all, and you won’t have the worry about not being able to mot it

Where does it say not private cars . As I read it yesterday so long as it was valid first march it will get automatic 3 month extension.

Edit looks like you were right I miss read the bit under the notice that said all other vehicles will get autp exemption

I'll have to dig out the source but the MOT grace period is only for commercial vehicles right now and not passenger vehicles.

I'm going to try and book a test today for my partners car after I spent the weekend prepping it (well away from people!)

I just found that, mine's booked in April 1st. Test expires on the 2nd so not too worried. I also got the other car done a week or so ago so we have legal transport...not that we're using them at the moment!

Heard about this on the radio, mine's due in early June.I'm wary that the insurance firms will find away out should you be involved in a accident.

This shouldn't be an issue. You will have a valid MOT, which is a requirement of some policies. If your car is unroadworthy then it really makes little difference whether it has an MOT or not. Only thing it might impact is the value of a write off payout. A car that hasn't had an MOT for 18 months will be worth less than one with a recent MOT. That said they are insurance companies so you never know!

So if my MOT is due now and I use the 6 month extension, will the new MOT be for 6 or 12 months from that date?

i think it kicks in if the MOT date falls after the 30th of March

Grant Shapps, from that link up there ^^^

'Given the circumstances I'm granting an MOT temporary exemption so that if your MOT is due from 30th March 2020 you will automatically receive a SIX-month extension. However, you must still keep your car in a roadworthy condition and garages will remain open if you need repairs.'

My son's car and my van are due next month and I have been pondering what to do (particularly as the garage I normally go to is next to work and I am working from home). That sorts it out nicely! Thanks for posting.
