The over-rated thread is going on and on so let's turn this on it's head...
For me - Black Sabbath.
Unfortunately always left in Led Zepellin's shadow but a simply wonderful band. Snowblind, Changes, Radio (Am I Going Insane?), Sweet Leaf, Heaven and Hell...
The Beatles
It came up in the last week or two I think.

Spiritualized
Sabbath yes, but for me The Wolfhounds.
Jason Mraz (though technically he's not a band)
"whistles dixie"

New Model Army
Love and Rockets
The Vapors
Portishead

The Sundays
"hums I feel fine"
Mother Love Bone are pretty damn good and mostly overlooked, allthough I guess they did pretty much become Pearl Jam, so they have only got themselves to blame.
I also thought Kula Shaker were miles better than any of the Brit Pop bands they were thrown in with.
James Brown and the JBs - not only did they set the template for much of modern music (hypnotic locked groove with interesting stuff going on over the top of it), the sounds from their records have basically been lifted wholesale by everyone and their dog.
And that's before you get into the radical politics of a lot of their records - barring the likes of Public Enemy I can't think of a single modern equivalent of songs like "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud".
And yes I know he's not exactly obscure, but barring "Sex Machine" and "I Feel Good" you don't hear a lot of his work out there. Except via second hand sources!
Bikebouy, when Harriet goes err ahh in Can't be sure. That does it for me.
The macc lads!
Subtle
Stiltskin
Another for Black Sabbath
And another for Alice in CHains
Big Star
+1 Alice in Chains

Richard Thompson Band. I cannot understand how he's not our most revered singer/songwriter/guitarist.
With you on this one, failedengineer. RT's released so many great albums and he's still one of the best live acts I've seen. It's nuts that he isn't a legend.
But the answer to the OP's question is still Alice in Chains.
Down in a Hole is officially beautiful.
Cocteau twins for sure.
Think Led Zep were a bit underrated for a time (80s) - their legacy was stomped on by punk more than any other band. This has faded nowadays and they're back to being icons again.
Haircut 100

What about Janes Addiction? What a top band and crazy, I mean properly crazy bastards too
did someone actually suggest Stiltskin? dear god..
Depends on the context really.
Sabbath have always been known to be heavy gods to anyone whom cares about such genre's, yet my mum certainly wouldnt rate them..
Id go with The Flaming Lips, yet ive been to gigs with 10,000+ watching them in the UK. they certainly deserve more adolation though.
Faith No More too. Loved by many, but not nearly enough.
C_G.. You were a Ligger? Nice.
How d'ya know he doesn't wear pants then?.. Oh hang on..
Blue Aeroplanes - a fantastic Bristol band that never got the attention of Massive Attack or Portishead.
