Scenario: Me riding along the road on the left, as you do (on my road bike). Driver waiting to pull out from a junction on the right.

What I seem to be seeing more and more of is drivers who, in this scenario, decide to pull out whilst I am level with the junction and then proceed to drive alongside me, either straddling both lanes, or completely on the wrong side of the road, before they pick up speed and pull away. I had a recent situation where the car had to slam on their brakes and pull in behind me because they didn't see a car coming in the opposite direction. They then proceeded to carry out a "punishment overtake" because somehow it was my fault.

This seems to be becoming an increasingly popular move, or is it just my imagination?

Don’t know whether it’s getting more common but I’ve had it happen a few times... extremely disconcerting as you’ve no idea whether they’ve actually seen you, and aren’t just going to drive into you!

Extremely *tish driving but I bet if you asked them why they did it they wouldn’t even think they’ve done anything wrong

EDIT: apparently “*tish” isn’t a swear on the new forum! I wonder whether **** is?

EDIT EDIT: yep 😂

<Mod Edit: It probably should be though.>

I'm hoping it becomes totally normal for cyclists to wear a camera.  I have a dash cam for my car, and if I were cycle commuting again I'd certainly go for a camera.

Hopefully it will then get to be so ubiquitous that drivers just assume their behaviour is being filmed.

This does make the assumption that authorities would actually do something about incidents - which can be hit and miss (no pun intended).

Helmet with a built in camera?

Not sure about helmet with a built in camera. When the helmet expires then the camera does too. Seems wasteful.

Has anyone noticed the other new trend of having a dashcam fitted in your car and then driving like a total ****. Helpfully capturing evidence for the collision that they are likely to be instrumental in causing.

There's more shit driving simply because there are more drivers. They see other people driving shit, don't have the brain capacity  to do the right thing themselves, so immediately fall into the routine of driving like a moron.

Surprised no-one has told you you were too far over to the left. Cos even on here, bad driving can be a cyclist's fault you know.

I rode to the chip shop earlier this evening. As I was approaching a roundabout I signaled to move over to the right (single lane entrance to RA). I looked over my shoulder prior to manouvering as usual and saw a grey Fiesta approaching at such a speed that she couldnt stop if a car had been on the roundabout, let alone slow for me. She was intent on getting past resulting in me having to stop. If i hadn't i would have been hit by her car, forced up the kerb or both as car and bike would not fit between the kerbs and bollards at the roundabout entry.

Not 20 secnods after this , as I turned right on the roundabout i had to stop again because a black Clio did not give way. He would have broadsided me had i not stopped.

I bet these two drivers moan when they see cyclists on the pavement!

Get a mountain bike and stop fannying around on the road. Roads are for cars.

We live in a society where people HAVE TO GET THERE (where ever there is) and cyclists are stopping them from GETTING THERE NOW!!!! Look at how jumping red lights has become the norm. Can't stop for traffic lights, got to GET THERE!!!!! It's only going to get worse.

Why the hell should I be prevented from doing something I enjoy by self-important, idiotic drivers?

Oh, and I also have a mountain bike, a DH bike and a cx bike, but I shouldn't have to justify what I do to excuse dangerous road users.

Dunno about cyclists, I had to follow a car, well, me and eight or nine other cars, the driver of which clearly only ever drives on Bank Holiday weekends, you know the sort, consistently drives at fifteen to twenty mph below the posted limit, on a dry road in clear weather. 🤬🤪

I had an incident on Tues, coming up to a narrow single lane bridge with traffic lights, junction. Immediately before it on my left, truck waiting to turn, lights green, I was doing just under 20, orange windproof and front light on, must have seen me, surely...

He decided to pull out just as I passed, almost forcing me into bridge parapet. In the confusion I somehow managed to get a good puch on the truck with base of my fist, sounded loud from outside.

Found him half a mile later waiting in a layby, still stressed and fuming about it, you know how it is. He got out as he saw me coming, big chap, horrible feeling this is going to get fighty, but I guess I've a little more chance if I stop than if I'm on the bike and he's back in his truck, so I stopped.

"Sorry mate, you OK?"  General politeness ensued on both sides, parted amicably.

I've had a few near misses, and a couple of hits, but amazing how immediately and effectively a well apology reduces stress/anger etc, arrived at work quite jolly.

Anyway, back to the OP, yes, that particular move seems to be getting more common in my experience.

Possibly, although my hd dash cam costs significantly less (£22) than my helmet!

Touché, oldtalent.  I'm on the same wavelength as you and so totally agree!

The other week I was walking along Lombard Street from Bank in that London. It's a one-way single carriageway with contraflow cycle lane. I was walking with the traffic (of which there actually wasn't any at the time).

It's a busy thoroughfare for walkers and I was following a few blokes along the margin of the right hand side of the road, half on half off of the pavement. A cyclist coming the other way resolutely stayed in his cycle lane even though there were 5-6 people walking towards him in the lane. The guy in front of me was on his phone and  stepped slightly left to go around another pedestrian who was going up the kerb.

Next thing is, a scream from the cyclist and a hefty collision resulting in both of them on the floor. Effing and jeffing, etc.

Whose fault? Both! Pedestrian shouldn't have been doing what he was and shouldn't have moved out. Cyclist should have allowed more space

People are dicks. I can't help but wonder if either would have done the same if they were in a car.

The other issue is poor enforcement. I'm getting to the sort of age when policemen are looking younger and younger, but the other day I followed a marked panda car which crept forward at traffic lights until the front wheels were 1m over the stop line, then showed poor lane discipline on the roundabout, drifting over, no signals etc. Merseyside ain't great for people observing stop lines anyway, and now I know why if the rozzers don't even bother.

Had one today. Cycling along nice straight road with a clear sharp dip. Mini behind me pulls out and then notices cyclist coming up out of dip and pulls back in. I just kept on cycling but shook my head in slight disbelieve at attempted manoeuvre. After dip mini pulls up next to me and shout “what’s your problem I pulled in behind you” so I replied “you think that was a good place to overtake”. At which point the girlfriend/friend/wife joined in with my point of view and mini drove off. Hopefully he got an earbashing. Crap driving but no worse than the roadie I almost ran into 5mins later as he jumped a set of red lights in some traffic works.

Ther's no fear of a random catch because there are no patrol cars on the road, the Police are letting ANPR do all the work for them then tweeting about it to create an impression that they are doing a great job.

It never ceases to amaze me, the number of drivers in YouTube videos who almost kill a cyclist because they're in such a tearing hurry and have been inconveniently slowed down for ten seconds, yet have all the time in the world to then stop and have a road-rage argument for five minutes.

I was on a shop ride yesterday. Fairly big bunch I was at the back pondering a slow puncture when a 4x4 comes up behind on a narrow road with very little straight. It stayed behind for about 3 orv4 mins and then came past when the road widened. Amazing to think that considerate and patient driving is so note worthy.

& similarly, I just don't get drivers who tailgate you along country lanes early on a morning, obviously loving their job cos they simply can't wait to get there, then tear past on a blind bend only to get jammed behind Farmer Giles for the next 5 miles.

I get that nearly every morning.

Since we moved to Sheffield from Hampshire I’ve experienced a new dickhead manoeuvre I’ve never seen before. I’ve had it happen 3 or 4 times now

I’m turning right. Once at a roundabout, otherwise at a normal right turn. There’s plenty of room, and quite a bit of traffic around. I’m confident, got good lights on, and I’m owning my bit of road. So I start my turn, nice clear signal, pull over confidently to the RHS of my lane. As I do this, the car behind decides they want to overtake me and do it anyway, veering onto the opposite side of the road. As I’ve got my hand out they tend to get one of an assortment of gestures as they pass. One guy got a ‘slow down’ gesture, realised he wasn’t going to pass me without a head on collision, slowed, nearly stalled, then came past revving the engine like a bellend. One got so close to the central island at a roundabout (w****r signal from me) I thought they were going to hit it.

I’m ready for it now, but it’s odd for sure.

I'm unfortunate enough to have to drive around 40K a year for my job.

What I'm seeing is that allthough you get the occasional  nob that delibaratley tries to cut cyclists up or intimidate them most of it is just a really shit standard of driving and lack of attention as to what's going on around them.

The more worrying thing to me is the reaction from people that have made a mistake switching from really sorry mate into the defensive mode of trying to blame anyone but themselves.

I've also learned that trying to drag people out of cars and being confrontasional sometimes doesn't help.

Sometimes a softer, that was a bit dangerous and frightened me approach works a bit better.

Then again some people really don't care...

There's nothing you can say to them that'll help so you may as well just  ride away and leave them to it.

Had a piece of shit in a van pull out in front of me whilst I was driving to work. I had to brake pretty hard, so I gave him a blast on the horn to let him know. About ten seconds later we are going along and he starts indicating left as though he’s going to pull over and is waving his hand out of the window in an attempt to beckon me past. Into oncoming traffic.

Fortunately I’m not as stupid as I look and wasn’t going to take the bait, but what kind of sick bastard does that?

I was so nonplussed that I forgot to get his reg number and get the scumbag the sack (it was a company van), but then the company probably wouldn’t give a toss either.

Now that I'm driving 'proffeshnly' & commuting to work, It's opened my eyes to the dismal state of driving standards in this country. To a lot of drivers even the basics seem to have been forgotten since they passed (?) their test.

Another one that gets me is signalling to turn right at a roundabout and then going straight on. Bizarre.

Oh, and don't get me started on people doing U-turns around mini roundabouts. Grrrrrrrr.

Me too! The amount of times I've had to drive 3 miles to find somewhere to turn round & go back the way I came, boils my blood!

Gold brown Jaguar doing 80mph down the M6 today with an obvious dangerous collapsed suspension or bent axle or something.   swerving on everybump.  Jesus Christ I hope he got pulled.    bliddy idiot.

Its like the budget for traffic policing has been slashed or something...oh wait..

Had exactly the situation the OP described last year. It was an OAP. The only 2 scenarios were if he didn't see me or he did and decided to drive at me was deliberate. He stated he did see me.

So either he's blind or has poor judgement.

I reported him to the DVLA. Hopefully at least his had an eyesight check. Ideally off the road for everyone's benefit.

I asked a friend who's a copper why driving is so bad lately.

His experience is that too many people are on their phones. Still.

Had one (in the car) last week, going straight on at a mini roundabout.  Young woman in a small hatchback approaching from the left didn't give way and pulled straight out in front of me.  I stood on the brakes and leaned on the horn, she slowed down but didn't stop.  I was sat there stationary thinking, "she's actually just going to drive into me...!"  She eventually did stop a couple of inches from my front wing, just as I'd got it back in gear about to set off again and try and steer out of her way.  Oblivious.
