Feel really sorry for the person, but it just emphasises the stupidity of car security these days:
Had a bit of a nightmare. I’ve managed to drive off from home with my BMW car key on the roof. Car started as the key was close enough - key then falls off and we are now at the Channel Tunnel minus key and of course not able to start the car.
My Mazda starts beeping loudly as soon as I take the keys more than a couple of feet outside the car when it's running. I'd assume a BMW does similar?
On ours at least it reports on the dash that the key isn't connected
If you manage to miss the warning it's entirely possible to drive off without the key.
Say, for example, it's in your wife's handbag and you give her a lift somewhere and drive home. Then need to get the spare key up pick her up later...
I mean, it could have been worse, they might have been on the train!
