The whole point is that you don’t need to be pushing a car to its limits or even close to feel the difference … it’s just how the car feels as the power is transferred.
Yep 🙂
it really doesn’t cost much to get a proper mount for your phone or satnav.
Those Brodit things are no better than a windscreen mount IMO.

ahh, the tell-tale bullshit of an mx5 bore.
My last car didn’t have central locking, ABS or electric windows.
It also never went wrong.
My GTi-6 had all of those and the first and third are what went wrong along with the alarm (pretty much the only things ever did go wrong but it was enough to make it non-economic) and traded in for less than the seats were worth.

You drive a 2.0tdi FWD euroshitbox and I claim my five pounds. 😀
so I'm right then. driving gloves too?

Never drove GTi-6 but did the S16 it was based on. Pedals were all in the wrong place and it was a bit snappy on the lift off. Did not want.

Right about what?
I don't drive and have never owned a Mazda.
Was I right?
the real world detectable difference between RWD and FWD - how stuck you get when you have the wrong tires on in the winter.
Was I right?
nope. apart from the euro bit.
oh and it is a shitbox, but then I haven't cleaned it in 100k miles.

Don't spoil it all at once ... you just cut out the RX7 and RX8 in one fell swoop.
Still some people are just less sensitive than others... and this feels like a conversation about condoms and female orgasms that concludes with the person admitting that
a) they are a virgin
and
b) What do you mean female orgasm?

I buy my cars for carting stuff around, eg sundry related humans, werewolfhound, bikes etc.
I go for the poverty pack models. Get the biggest car with the least toys, the least things to go wrong. Plus the trim is usually more basic so slobber from the werewolfhound is less likely to spoil it.
I’m currently considering a 3 series touring or C Class AMG line estate, having abandoned the idea of keeping my 120d.
Word of warning there, the Merc's eat tyres. They go through them at an alarming rate, a colleague has one and we're talking 14k to a set of rears and not much better for the fronts.
My 320d M-Sport is far better, nigh on 40k out of the fronts and over 30k to a set of rears.
But anyway back to the OP, I'd go for the more premium car with as many extras as you can afford.
I totally object to paying extra for leather seats, cruise control, climate control and DAB radio. If you're buying a high spec car in the first place, such as a Golf GTD it should IMHO have leather as a minimum.
Once you add leather, climate control and the decent media system it's £34k plus change
A 120d M-Sport is nearly £2k cheaper for the equivalent car, and I'd consider the BMW to be more of a premium brand than the VW
The Audi A3 Sport Back Black Edition is better value than the Golf at pretty much the same price as the BMW, although not quite as powerful
Recently bought my first car with a heated steering wheel, and for someone like me with poor circulation I'm never going to be without one in the future.
@Kryton57 - how about a 3 series GT as long as you haven't got a dog? Bigger boot than the touring with and without the seats down, and a much smoother ride.
Thanks Steve/Shinton
I didn’t know that about Mercs.
I had considered the GT as the perfect motorway cruiser plus bike Carrier in disguise. Its bigger than the touring though, and the touring is about 30mm from fitting within my garage.
Although the GT’s fugly perception helps with the price.
edit: you made me look for one at my local dealer where they have a Black Metallic GT 330d with red leather in my price range. I hate you.
Not as ugly as its big brother, and I can get my 650b+ in without the wheels off. But it is a big car:
The F34 is based on the F35 chassis used by the Chinese market long wheelbase sedan.[2] It has a wheelbase that is 110 mm (4.3 in) longer than the F31 3-series estate. The roof is 79 mm (3.1 in) higher than the F31 and the width is increased by 17 mm (0.67 in)
Got auto wipers, reversing camera and other shoot on my 2002 Nissan, you are sooh last decade darhlings ! PS It was the first car to have a reversing camera and it's needed !
The missus Nissan has 360 cameras and it's a game to park perfectly between the spaces - bloody great. Just hones your skills.
My brother in law's Kuga will park itself, but he has chickened out ever using it (he's in insurance).
Don’t spoil it all at once … you just cut out the RX7 and RX8 in one fell swoop.
I came within a gnat's cock of owning an RX-7 as my first car, but was talked out of it by the missus. Ended up with a Rover 214.
I still hate her.
I like to have a mug of coffee held in perfect balance in my cupholder. I appreciate that most drivers will never be able to tell the difference.
Heh heh

Devil's avocado: that would just bump the base price up. Would that be acceptable, or would you complain about that too?

I don't like leather though. So it should be an option. Or at least cloth could be a -ve cost option
Seems to me that you could spec a Passat with tons of cool stuff and it’d come out the same or a bit more than a basic E-Class.So which would you go for? For me it’d be more gadgets.
We've kind of got a split of both at the moment as our fleet consists of 2 Mercedes (one being a lowish end but still quite well equipped, the other being an AMG one so quite a bit higher spec) plus a fairly top-end Mazda (I don't think there were actually any options for it as it has pretty much every possible toy as standard) and a middling spec Fiesta.
The low spec Merc is the newest of them and in therefore in many respects is the best equipped - certainly regarding phone integration etc. (it has Android Auto & Apple Carplay) plus it has a really, really nice autobox. We could have bought a higher spec Ford or VW or the like, however my experience with high-spec Fords and VAG cars hasn't been great as all the toys are just more things to go wrong. On the other hand the Mazda is over 10 years old and everything still works and it drives as well as a new car- although it's crap on fuel compared to more modern cars. The Fiesta is a nice little car and good to drive (it's the 125hp version of the 1 litre turbo) but is already developing some issues, plus the gearbox is crap.
