Hi

I have a TP-Link TL-WR702N portable router. I used to be able to plug it into my Dell Mini 9 Hackintosh, use the built in share network tick box and then plug the router into the Ethernet socket and use my laptop as a wifi connection.

This was useful for connecting to BT WIFI when in our caravan, and then connecting devices to the laptop (netflix on an XBOX for example). Anyway, long story short, the Hackintosh build stopped working, so I've reinstalled XP, but can't get this thing working the same way as it was. The web page for the device lists the available modes as
AP Mode
Client Mode
Repeater Mode
Router Mode
Bridge Mode

Which one of these do I need? On OSX I only had to tick a box and plug the bloody thing in!

If I understand this right you need to use AP mode.
Plug the portable router into the laptop Ethernet socket.
Create a bridge between the Ethernet connection and the WiFi connection on the laptop.
"To bridge connections
Open Network Connections
Under LAN or High-Speed Internet select each of the private network connections that you want to be part of the bridge.
Right-click one of the highlighted private network connections, and then click Bridge Connections."

That's the mode I was in before, when using the Hackintosh, I'll see what I can do with that, cheers!

So what path was the data taking before, it's a bit hard to understand from the above.

Was it:
BTWIFI ---(wifi)---> Laptop
then: Laptop ---(ethernet)----> router
then: Router ---ethernet---> XBox?

BTWIFI - connected to laptop via WiFi and logged in via web page

Router plugged in to laptop via Ethernet cable and broadcasting its own SSID

XBOX/iPhone/iPad connected via WiFi to router

What TP-Link call "Bridge mode" looks like it should work. You would need to use the laptop to do the web page login before the XBox would (probably) work, and also hope that the BTWifi doesn't block the connection by the router, but if it works it would allow you to use the Xbox without the laptop being on, or any ethernet cables.

Still no luck, thanks for all of your help, I think that maybe I'm just not quite clever enough to sort this!!

I use mine in client mode - the 702 connects to my Wifi and then I connect my bluray player to the 702 with an ethernet cable. That would work for you with a single device, if you had more than one device you could use a cheap hub to split the connection multiple ways. No hackintosh involved then!
