The answer is to excersie as much as tyou like, while saving up for replacement knees and hips.
My knees no longer constantly hurt like they used to when I played hockey (from which I was "retired" in my late 20s), but I suspect I'll have trouble anyway.
Oh, and remember that too much cycling has implicaitons from an osteoporosis perspective - you just can't win..!
I know a number of ex top athletes, when I say top, good enough to get GB vests and so on, sub 28:30 10k runners.
Of the ones I see occasionally none complain of any other problems but the weight that they have put on once settled down with kids etc.
This type of advice (and of course there needs to be a degree of common sense used when exercising) is one of the reasons British distance running is in the Toilet.
A non-news item.
My dad's having a knee replacement soon, which his doctor says is likely to be a result of years spent caving as a young man and then decades spent cycling, skiing and walking on the hills. I don't think the fact that he's had to endure a couple of years of pain would make him change anything.
I've already had knee surgery once too, so I guess I might be heading the same way 🙂
I remember a friends dad met me once at a party. He had been into cycling in a big way as a young lad and had been a cat 1 roadie. He'd then had to pack it all in when he got arthritis and totally blamed the cycling for it.
He then spent half of the night telling me to pack in cycling unless I wanted to go the same way.
What a miserable old git. **** off. I'd much rather cycle loads and then get arthritis than do nothing at all. (And possibly still get arthritis)

It's because recovery time increases as you age and doesn't mimic the same tissue laid down as when you were younger.
It's what you do out of the gym that counts too!
Train, rest, eat and recover! And save for bionic implants!
