what the hell is this crapola set??
Sounds like Korrupt FM
The Streets wiv a geezer shouting over it. Doesn't really work on the "radio" does it. 😆
Paul Weller's new look - a character from the Windowlicker video?
I've not been listening today. Mainly because the week after a featured festival is always dreadful. Live versions of stuff which was no doubt fantastic when you were there but soooo unlistenable to everyone who wasn't.

Absolutely. And they won't shut the hell up about it!
Sounds like Korrupt FM
Korrupt FM is better.
6 music has sadly turned into little more than a stream of email and text messages being read out between tracks. Most of the DJs talk far too much and have little to say. In their defence, how are they supposed to come up with 15 hours of worth while content week in, week out? The format is broken. They should rotate DJs every six weeks or so.
The first time I heard this DJ I thought he was taking the piss. Definitely an acquired taste which I'm now on board with.
Good groove and fantastic music.

I used to love it. Used to listen all the time. A few of my friends work there.
now, i find it unlistenable. It's shockingly bad. I don't know whether I'm just out of touch, old, a complete heathen, not in touch with d'youth etc. But I just don't listen anymore
Have you lot not heard RadMac's Crisps on the Radio feature??!!. Surely the very apogee of broadcast quality, it's only downhill once this finishes.
The other problem is scheduling. My alarm clock goes off at 6am. At that point I think most people would like some nice middle of the road Indie.
Even the morning they put Voodoo People on was a nice surprise to wake up to.
But in that 6-7am hour I don't want anything that could in any way be described as "challenging to listen to", I want middle of the road music, a bit of news and a coffee. Not a f** live recording of f*** Sleaford Mods.
It’s always been disappointing. Too much talk by ****y people. They should have pure music hours with only an occasional time check, like Radio Paradise.
6musics playlist seemed more egalitarian back in 2004.
Seemed like they would play almost anything and without much chin-stroking and over-intellectualising.
It's good that mark Radcliffe showcases up and coming bands, but there must have been so many artists that fell foul of 6musics submission criteria.
By contrast, I found that 'sunny Govan FM' would play a lot of local polish bands and it was quite refreshing to hear music that didn't rely on the familiar uk music tropes (anemic indie music, lacking subversiveness and/ 'artistic' aspirations, but bereft of genuine visual depth).
There's still a hostility from BBC musics bods towards metal. This seems to be based on a perceived lack of intelligence of the artists and their listeners.
There's a smattering of metal now and again, but even when I listen to Daniel p carters rick show on radio1, 90 percent of the bands he plays have vocalists who seem to compete with each other to occupy the same vocal range, in a 'bulletformyvalentine' style.
So, overall, 6music is like a mashup of 'mojo' and 'uncut' magazine...more sine waves than jaggy sawtooths.
Odd. Does it really matter that a particular radio station doesn't play the music you like? There's loads of ways of listening to shitty metal
https://www.radio.net/genre/metal
Their raison d'etre is to play "a unique, eclectic and alternative-spirited mix of music" *
I would consider metal to be alternative, so the greatbeardedone has got a point if he feels that they're not playing a range of the genre. To describe metal as shitty is lame - it may not be your cup of tea but don't write it off just because you don't like it.
I've pretty much given up on 6 music apart from the odd half hour of the funk & soul show, they play too much music that they think you should be listening to, rather than music you might actually want to listen to.
Does anyone remember the Rinse on xfm?

I might detest metal with a passion. But it's actually necessary to listen to something loud now and again (something to do with resetting the cilia in ones ears?).
Artistically, it's also good to include metal in the schedule. Credit where it's due, but 6music doesn't feature much in the way of virtuoso musicians. That can be a good thing as it encourages people to have a go at creating music (wasn't that what punk was all about?). But it's good, now and again to feature bands who raise the bar in terms of pure fretboard shredding.
You may hear metal on the 'freakzone', but that's just a ghetto for anything that doesn't sound like 'Keane'.
And a lot of 6musics playlist features too many rich, old, white guys (bob Dylan, wainwright whatever, and that USA crooner who looks like Ron Perlman). Isn't that radio2's job?
I appreciate Gilles petersons show, but I'd like to hear much more world music throughout the schedule.
Something that 6music may never have played, but one of the high-water marks of the 21st century...
Yeah, I wasn't suggesting they start playing Judas Priest on heavy rotation 🙂
Correction: I meant mark Riley, not mark Radcliffe. My bad😞
And the crooning Ron Perlman lookalike is tom waits.
I think that playing any metal constantly would be slightly wearing. Even Bon jovi was too much for Noriega.
But I would argue that 6music would need to reach further than the token gesture on Steve lamaqs show.
don’t write it off just because you don’t like it.
In normal life, that’s what people do with music, films, tv etc etc. Unless you live in a strange world where opinions are always given as full critical reviews. I doubt it.
I really don't see why they can't play evening music during the day.
I too am livid that they don’t play the stuff that *I* like all the time.
I just wish I knew where to find a variety of music to listen to.
Best show by far is Gideon Coe.
In normal life, that’s what people do with music, films, tv etc etc.
Yeah, I get that, but I just take umbrage with folk calling other people's taste in music "shitty". You may not like metal, but in my opinion it's no less valid a musical genre because of that.
I'm not a fan btw, and kind of wish I hadn't bothered getting involved 😉
It’s just one of those bizarre things - that criticising someone else’s music gets people all upset. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest if someone thinks what I listen to is shit! In fact, I expect it.. in fact, I prefer it! 😂
I really don’t see why they can’t play evening music during the day.
Probably budget allocation.
I never really listen in the weekdays as it seems to be on rails, ie same eight to ten artists/songs on playlist, throw in some early New Order, bla bla rinse repeat.
wish I knew where to find a variety of music to listen to.
For variety it seems obvious change channels regularly. For ‘obscure and/or unsung’ artists and output then be prepared to get away from radio by spending endless evenings working at the streaming coalface and unearth gems via browsing musical family trees, dedicated fora, and then building playlists*
*I have fond memories of Audiogalaxy, which along with the (sadly closed in 2016) ‘Aquarius Records’ website 20 years ago was a great place to be online exploring bands/records from around the world of all kinds of genres from all kinds of places/eras. If (instead) anyone wants to be ‘down wiv da kids’ then I haven’t a single clue what channels to listen to. I’m over 50yrs, for crying out loud!
https://web.archive.org/web/20160630232046/http://aquariusrecords.org/
I’m over 50!
And don”t recognise sarcasm when I see it 😉
^ That too. It’s usually spectral in my case 😬 ie I can’t do it very well when I want to, and certainly miss it most of the time. To top it all people usually think I’m being completely sarcastic when I’m being completely literal/earnest! Aiiiieee!
Doesn’t bother me in the slightest if someone thinks what I listen to is shit!
That's the thing, though, innit - just because I don't like it doesn't mean it's shit, it just means I don't like it. 🙂
Each to their own - in terms of both genres and stations.
On 6 I particularly like....Lauren Laverne, Gid Coe, Gilles Peterson, Tom Robinson, Cerys Matthews, RadMac.
I don't actively dislike anything about the station.
I’ve had it on since 3 and not had a single play listed track plus I even danced around the table at one point. Although admittedly, Giles’ show is not for everyone.
The only ones who need talking to are lamacq and kershaw
Ravenscroft is the best
I’ve found so much new (to me) music, new and old, it’s a sorry cliche but it’s worth the licence fee alone. Especially considering thats not far off what I pay to spotify.
And a lot of 6musics playlist features too many rich, old, white guys (bob Dylan, wainwright whatever, and that USA crooner who looks like Ron Perlman). Isn’t that radio2’s job?
Are you sure you’re not listening to Radio 2 or Planet Rock? Because that doesn’t sound anything at all like what I hear on 6Music, quite the contrary.
And if by ‘that USA crooner who looks like Ron Perlman’ you mean Tom Waits, I can’t say I hear him played often enough, but crooner? 🤣
This is possibly where he gets closest to being a ‘crooner’, in 1985, that’s thirty-odd years ago!
And he still ain’t, nor ever was, Matt Monroe!
Best show by far is Gideon Coe.
He's good, but I think Marc Riley has the edge normally, though he has been championing some pretty dire stuff in the last 6 months, Richard Dawson sounds truly awful, and out of tune to me, Pigs pigs pigs - what a racket, there are others too, who I dont think should played.
Gideon is a little milder, and certainly plays stuff that isnt heard elswhere, Okotobe Beaver seem to be played a lot. I saw them, they are all around 4 foot tall, they are tiny.
Richard Dawson sounds truly awful,
Sorry. So wrong. Recently I’ve been suffering from anxiety. To the point I’ve found it hard to leave the flat.
I dip in and out of 6music. When it first started I couldn’t stand it, all that jonngly shit does my head in.
But over the last couple of years it’s become a more comprehensive music channel, and yesterday I heard some Contemporary Jazz on it.
Which means I’ll be listening to it more and more.
Can’t stand the chuffing crisp club, nor that bloke who insists on playing kids TV music from the 70’s...
And a lot of 6musics playlist features too many rich, old, white guys (bob Dylan, wainwright whatever, and that USA crooner who looks like Ron Perlman). Isn’t that radio2’s job?
You’re not listening to 6M if you can post that. I don’t listen to it much these days - mainly the occasional evening, or weekend mornings - but I can’t remember the last time I heard any of the musicians you name. Are you making stuff up?
It's always interesting reading these threads and being reminded there are people who deeply dislike the stuff I rate most.
There’s still a hostility from BBC musics bods towards metal.
I've got what I consider a pretty wide taste from soul and Jazz to techno and house to rock but metal leaves me not just cold but reaching immediately for the off button. Mary Anne Hobbs drops some in every so often and it's an instant mute.
I do enjoy listening to 6music, just that metal seems noticeable by it's absence.
I did hear Huey Morgan playing the Rolling Stones 'satisfaction', yesterday. Nothing against them or tom waits, but they are both very well established artists. It's debatable whether they are bringing anything new to the table.
(And I'm pretty sure 6music played tom waits cover of a Xmas song, at Xmas!)
Having just listened to radio1's rock show. Great material, but most of the bands were going for that 'enter-shikari' tenor? pitched screams. That's gotta hurt!
The exception being 'hyborean' and the band which preceded them (featured a bass? vocal, but lacking in punch).
It would be nice to hear more bands breaking out of that vocal range. It's starting to sound a bit samey.
Maybe if tom waits collaborated with 'HIM'...
Sorry, by 'loud music', I meant in the social/ cultural sense.
Obviously, listening to music at a high volume can damage hearing.
Stay safe, kids:)
