Out for a meal last night to celebrate Ms Spanners birthday.
All very nice and pleasant, good food, good service etc.

Then the bill arrived.
A starter had been missed off the total, leaving the bill £7.00 short.

Do you:

A. Draw attention to the mistake and ask for a new bill, worried that the missing cash will be taken from the wages of the serving staff.
B. Take it as a sign that someone loves you, pay the reduced bill and have it away on your toes, or
C. Don't say anything, but leave a bigger tip.

We went for A, but B was very, very tempting for a short while.

What would you lot do?

Not wishing to turn this into an STW pitchfork job, but would you point it out if they overcharged you? Thought so 😉

Edit: might do C if I was in a hurry and couldn't be arsed with the faff I suppose.

Depending on the restaurent,
large chain = C
small local pub = A

I never check the bill, so B.

If I'd checked the bill, B. Or C.

I take the attitude that I've asked how much they'd like me to pay, they've given me an answer, I've paid what they asked.

You could be in for a close run contest.

My answer is D and you are a racist.

If it was good food and good service, then i'd make it up to the real total with the tip. That way no one gets hard done by, and they think you're a great customer.

Probably B since I don't check the bill that often, but if I noticed, A.

It's not really a moral dilemma. One option is stealing; the other isn't. I'd tell someone if they've undercharged me by £1, let along £7.

Can't say I ever really scutinise a bill unless it's wildly out from what I was expecting.

Pay what they asked.

What is a moral?

Flaperon + 1

you ordered it and ate it - why would you not pay for it?

I'd point out the mistake, but then I appreciate the effort that is involved in producing good food and happily pay for what I eat. (though if its not up to standard I'll pull them up on that there and then too, Raymond Blanc's Brasserie Blanc was on the receiving end of that a while back)

If you're happy with the meal, A, if not then possibly B.

Unlikely that management will find out that a starter has been missed if the serving staff have missed it.

It's not a dilemma if there are three options.

Depends how sh*t the service and food was. 9 times out of 10 I'd describe restaurants I've tried as average to not worth bothering with.

I think its more a case of being overcharged than under. If the service is bad or slow etc. I think its tough on the restaurant. If it was good etc- then yes, you point it out. Otherwise no (and you ask for a bigger discount). Which I do (especially on the service charge).

Generally speaking either B or C - but maybe I'd do A if the service was particularly good.

Is there a minimum or a maximum difference for which you would do A?

We always check the bill and it's happened both ways for us. On the occasions we were under charged, once it was a nice meal with great service. We pointed it out, they appreciated our honesty an let us have it for free anyway, so we left a big tip. The other time it happened the meal had been a cock up from start to finish, so we paid up, no tip, and walked away

I've been to restaurants where the staff have replied back (sniffs bottle) 'nope, nothing wrong with the wine'. With me gobsmacked at the arrogance. Most of them dont merit paying the bill anyway.

At least with traditional Chinese restaurants you come to expect quick, sharp and efficient service without a trace of smarm or pretence. 🙂

English people seem to trade off taste for a chirade of show/feinging. 😉

I have had similar happen, sometimes I've paid and left, especially if it wasnt a great meal or decent service, other times I've added a similar amount to the tip and other times I've pointed it out. I expect I've not notced before too.
