Corsa CDTi - one bike front wheel out easy, second bike needs both out and a bit of a squeeze (mind you, for us that's the missis' hybrid with mudguards, prolly a lot easier without guards).

Small economical cars tend to attract a premium second hand precisely because they're 'cheap to run' so unless you intend to keep the car for a long time the purchase price will more than offset any VED savings
For two blokes with bikes I'd be looking at an Astra van. Buttons to buy, cheap parts, if you get the 1.7dti / cdti you can read diagnostic codes off the dashboard with a little bit of trickery making DIY spattering more achievable. 60 miles to the gallon.
I bought one for £1k 5 years ago with the intention of running it around for 6 months - can't be parted from it now.
You might get cheaper tax on a car variant but you'll probably get a better value on the purchase price for the van
I had a Vauxhall Agila that could fit 2 bikes in with the front wheels off.

Astra Focus type estate is a good shout as they are plentiful cheap and drive well.

fabia sdi estate. Slow, economical, reliable, roomy, hardly any toys on it so not much to go wrong. You can even run it on veg oil.
esp as VED can now be paid monthly, even if it's a higher banding the running cost is minimal
I am still hunting. Nearly bought a £500 Focus tonight, but dithered and missed out.
Loved my 206sw. Had two, would have another again. Crashed one, the second was surplus to requirements in the end. Mine were 2l HDis though, and were £120 ved.
