New company car time. Currently have a mondeo zetec estate, 2l diesel, doing 30k miles a year. Mondeo again, or passat? Over to you STW...
Mondeo.
Not much in it, both are good options. If the company is paying then the mondeo is a bit more fun to drive but higher depreciation. If it was your own money and that kind of thing matters, the passat will hold value a bit better but it's a wee bit duller to drive. Very comfortable though and a nice place to be.
Superb an option? (unless it's an either or in which case rene has nailed it)
Not much in it
This. Go have a sit in them both and chose your favourite
The VW every day
30,000 miles a year?
Whichever you can get with an automatic box!
As above - go and sit in one and see which you prefer - are the controls easy to reach from your ideal sitting position etc... Do you like the feel of one over the other etc...
Mondeo.
Failing that, save a few quid and a V70 D3 (136 or 163) in SE with Winter Pack. I'm sat in mine just now waiting for someone enjoying comfy seats, nice stereo, £20 tax, 50mpg and the fact I've just thrown a full bike in the back easily.
D'oh.
New.
Company.
Car.
I'll read more carefully in future...
(V90)
That one.

For a long time. Had a Mondeo, very comfy. Work's Passat is fine for about 3hrs and then my bottom really starts to hurt, have to get out and walk about, terrible seats. Do not choose after a 1hr test drive, I'm guessing 30k miles a year means a lot of time sitting in it, try to get a 48hr test drive and really put some miles on it!
Had a Superb as a hire car on hols - it was OK, not as comfy as my mondeo after 3hrs driving, and was so keen on the boot hinging further back, meaning you can't sit on the bumper and stay dry when it's raining. 1st world problems and all that ;-).
Have sat in both, and there's very little between them. I'd miss the heated windscreen tho.. So beginning to look like I might be going with the STW illuminati view. Yay, well done STW!
Next dilemma - zetec 150hp or st-line 180hp? (My pocket for company tax won't go beyond that)
Cant even find the Mondeo estate on the ford bloody useless site, I'd be getting a Passat if I were my choice.
Cant even find the Mondeo estate
go to Ford website, click Mondeo, look at estate....
Surely, rather than going for more power, a higher spec such as titanium would be better if you spend that long in the car? Not sure if heated screen comes on zetec anymore.
I've owned older versions of both and I'd go for Mondeo - ride comfort is better and it's boot size is amazing. Yeah definitely Mondeo. Although, I'd have to drive the auto to see if the box is as good as the DSG.
I’ve got the Power Shift (DSG) Mondeo - it’s very good
I have had a Mondeo for about a year now. 180hp Vignale spec with auto gearbox. I am very impressed with it all round, I often do long drives in the car and have found it very comfortable and a nice place to spend the time. I had a Passat about five years ago, so not a fair comparison to the latest version of the Mondeo.
I went for a hatchback, as I preferred the looks over the estate and the boot is massive anyway. Favourite accessory is the heated steering wheel, never knew how good it would be on cold mornings until I got one!
Mazda 6! love mine
as others have said, the one with the nicest trim and the comfiest seat
The Passat GTE Estate if its something you can have. Had both. My Passat has all the R Line type stuff and a bit more power but its no hot hatch. Not sure the new Mondeo has reviewed as well as the past.
Mondeo. Fords are much nicer to drive. I've had Passats in the past, both plagued with stupid faults. I'll never own another VW.
The last time I was looking at cars I'd have taken the Mondeo over the Passat any day of the week. It was simply a nicer place to be.
Do you really need an estate? The Mondeo hatchback boot is cavernous to start with, and the estate surprisingly larger than the hatch.
If I were you I'd pop round to the local Ford and VW dealers, go sit in a few. Maybe even - radical suggestion I know - book a couple of test drives. This is also useful as an attitude test, find out whether they're people you want to be dealing with for the next few years.
Well I haven't got the estate and I haven't tried the Passat so a proper STW answer 🙂
I'll just say that I'm very happy with my 66 Mondeo Titanium 2.0D (150PS) - have had it for a bit over a year and it's been very good - great family car, lots of room, comfortable, good toys and the Ford Sync 3.0 with carplay/android auto works very well.
I’d miss the heated windscreen tho
VW DO HEATED WINDSCREENS!
Yeah, think Ford lost the exclusivity on that a couple of years ago.
Mondeo estate over Passat estate for me.
Skoda Superb estate over Passat estate. Superb gave me an impression it is wider ...
Mondeo over both.
A hybrid/electric will be way cheaper on company car tax
I think the only hybrid Mondeo is a saloon, and you lose a lot of rear space to the batteries. Dunno about VW.
Passat DSG. It's a pleasant enough place to watch the M4 grind to a halt.
A hybrid/electric will be way cheaper on company car tax
Possibly though my 2.0D Mondeo (not a company car) is only £20 a year to tax so I presume it's pretty low on CO2
