I make it front right.
Too old to be an astronaut anyway.
Hang on - there's 2 possible forwards (and backs) (but I think it still ends up in the same place so it don't matter)
Where's the answer?
(it's not a trick question)
Over there..
Where it started.
as per mikewsmith - on base - the cube has rotated, but sits the way up it was initially
Back on the bottom.
I don't think it's where it started, cos theres a 'backwards', which moves it to a side..
Forward -
Left -

Backwards -

Edited - rotate your phone to see

On the bottom.
It's on the left hand face as you were looking at it originally.
Hang on - there's 2 possible forwards (and backs) (but I think it still ends up in the same place so it don't matter)
The diagram shows the four possible directions the cube can move.
It doesn't show your point-of-view. You are positioned facing the cube and "forwards" is towards you.
Where's the answer?
I know it. I'll post it later.
on the base.
Or if you want to be tricky, you could ask with respect to what frame of reference has it moved, because in respect of the cube, it hasn't at all, it's where it always was.
facing right....
??
DrP
(edit - this was with 'forwards' with the cube rolling away from me..)
(double edit - misread the first firwards...one sec...)
(triple edit - back on the bottom)
I'm sticking with my original answer!
(Ha! Same as DrP. An he's astronaut material 🙂 )
Back to the bottom.

grab the nearest box shaped object and test your hypothesis
grab the nearest box shaped object and test your hypothesis
He's daft - Dez - grab the nearest cube with a dot on the bottom and test your hypothesis 😉
DrP
On the bottom
During some of the moves it doesn't actually move
Not on the bottom, surely?
The lefts don't change anything, but it ends up on the top after two 'forwards', then there's a right, which puts it back on the bottom, then the 'backward' at which point it's facing you, no?
grab the nearest cube with a dot on the bottom and test your hypothesis
No. It says "minds eye". 😛
Njee the move right only puts it onto the right hand side, not the bottom, no?
@GrahamS - You need to put the answer up before people start cheating and using their CAD software (or origami)!
Njee the move right only puts it onto the right hand side, not the bottom, no?
Oh shit, yeah 😳 , i was doubling the roll to the right.
I've run through again and think everyone's wrong. It's on the right.
Well, I got the same answer doing it in my head as I did rotating my phone in my hands so I'll stand by my answer.
It's on the cube. Do I win five pounds?
Soo..anyone had the call from NASA yet??
DrP
Bottom
on the back face ? two forwards put it on the top, right or left keeps it in same place but dot rotating, then one times back puts it on back face ?
Bottom.
the left do nothing, its on the bottom side of the cube, original position
Bottom (the two lefts and the one backwards don't change the dot's position)
A lot of confidence... who has done the experiment?
Definitely bottom. Forward and forward puts it on top. The two left's do nothing, right and right puts it back to bottom, backwards does nothing.
Soo..anyone had the call from NASA yet??
[s]NASA[/s] ESA. 😉
I got the same answer doing it in my head as I did rotating my phone in my hands so I'll stand by my answer.
You realise your phone isn't a cube? 😉
backwards does nothing.
How so? Oh, it looks like you've followed different instructions..
You realise your phone isn't a cube?
True, it does have 6 sides and a dot on the back though.
backwards does nothing.How so?
Dot is on the side at that point
I think it's on the bottom 🙂
It's back on the bot-bot.
I'm guessing it matters how long it takes to work out too? I was definitely not that quick!! 🙂
my last post misleading, was in answer to mikewsmith post above.
Now what's the official bleedin answer?!

I think verifying the answer is part of the test. 😆
bottom is correct btw.
can somebody please send Dez a box and a pen...
I await the apologies. 8)
I'll post the official answer once the lunch time mob get a look at it.
It's not a trick question.
It doesn't matter where you are looking at the box from. (Which I suspect is half the point.)
It doesn't matter where you are looking at the box from.
Oh you'd be surprised. A lot of people on facebook had trouble with that diagram and were treating that as their point-of-view, trying to roll the box forward onto its edge...
Those people would not make good astronauts 😆
The dot is always on the bottom of the cube in space.
The smart answer :
There is no up nor down in space apart from hourglass planetary nebulae
Do i get my astronaut licence now?
Nah, i'm a much better spaceship pilot than that example above, i spent many hours skiving high school at Oban to play defender and asteroids in the arcade and held the highest score so that obviously makes me a dead-cert for for astronaut school.
On the top .
The forward roll puts it on the back. Left left doesn't change that.
Forwards puts it on the top. Right then moves it to the right face.
Then backwards makes no difference, it's still on the right face.
Want to make the puzzle harder? Make the dot an arrow pointing at you. Now name the direction after following that sequence.
My 7 and 10 yr olds got this right.
Stealth edit - obviously they get their smarts from their mother as I needed it explaining to me..
Dez, are you rotating it around its corner rather than rolling it on its edge?
No, I get it - I was rotating it left (on it's base, not corner), rather than rolling it over. Stupid test. Who wants to go up into space anyway. s'rubbish.
“It’s SOL 87 and the crew failed the box test, commander GrahamS has taken control of the rabble and is about to open the hatch..”
It's under the middle cup. No, the cup on the left. No your left.
And while scrolling up and down trying to help explain the answer, I missed out the last step. Curse my tiny phone screen.
