Firstly, is your employer allowing it? I notice it is discretionary for employers and doesn't have to be paid. We're getting it off and paid. 👌
Secondly, how are you going to spend the day?
I think we're off on a hillwalk.
I'm sure ours will..
We're going to 417 if it's open. If not, Rogate...
Have no idea, wife expects me to take it off as schools are closed, but funnily enough none of my impossible to meet deadlines change just because there's an extra holiday 😖
That said I've just about given up trying to meet impossible and seemingly entirely arbitrary deadlines so might sack it off anyway, will be up in Muir of Ord for a CX race on the Sunday, would be nice to stay over and maybe get a gravel loop in on the Monday...
We'll be in France.
Hopefully riding the bikes to different cafes to eat cake
I work at the Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. No announcement yet as to how they plan to treat it. I'm due to be working as it stands, and still will be, but it may just mean a slightly different shift.
I don't get any extra days off for bank holidays. 😉
I run a shop, we'll be shut ....
Just waiting for confirmation.
Hopefully it will be personal choice as I'd prefer to work (self employed), but as I work for a company that has government contracts I'm pretty sure they will close for the day.
We are shut on Mondays anyway.
Presumably everybody thinking they were near the end of an agonising protracted house move who had finally got their chain to agree to a completion date of next Monday will now have another stress filled few days worrying which of the several banks essential to the process is going to say "sorry, no can do".
I’ll be having my 2 weeks off extended by a day
I've already got the week off, but as is traditional whenever there's a big royal event I shall clear off on a long ride somewhere to avoid the whole thing.
but as is traditional whenever there’s a big royal event I shall clear off on a long ride somewhere to avoid the whole thing.
I'll be doing the same. I did it at the last Royal Wedding and all the trails that would normally be full of walkers were really quiet. Bumped into a mate who was doing the same so we rode together and finished in a pub beer garden for a couple of pints 😀
No idea...but I'll probably try and be selfish and get out on the bike for the day if it does get confirmed we are off.
An interesting time this - the older generation (older parents) are very interested in seeing all this and are quite saddened by this all. My generation are aware of it but don't seem too bothered and the kids have absolutely no interest in it...so I suspect for a lot of people it'll be a day off work and off to do something they enjoy.
Will there be another one for the coronation?
I don't work on Mondays* so it's not going to make a difference to me.
*Or any days.
I think we’re off on a hillwalk.
Blencathra via Sharp Edge for me, 14yr old daughter and her best friend.
Or Helvellyn via Striding Edge. Will decide nearer the time.
“It is very hard to believe that the right to paid holiday is an absolute moral right” Jacob Rees-Mogg
be warned
Get that child back underneath that loom
No doubt there will be mass panic buying at the supermarkets on the Sunday, the likes we have not seen since Christmas Eve every year ..... 😉
Probably looking after our youngest while also paying for a full day of care from nursery that they won’t deliver because they don’t give refunds for bank holidays.
I'm currently at a week-long conference in Dublin so I really hope my work gives us the day off so I can just sleep...
School closed so bike ride with son if weather is ok
I don't work Mondays so can book another day in lieu
I had already booked the 19th off as holiday because it's my birthday. So I was going to have a lie-in, go to a cafe for lunch, maybe make some music.
Then the union called us out on strike that day.
Now ol' Queenie has called everyone out on strike that day, so the union will probably cancel theirs.
But, one way or another, I'll be having a day off!
I only work Thursdays & Fridays on my annualised hours contract so it doesn’t apply to me.
Local government so day off for everyone.
Why would employers choose to pay employees to do nothing?
Would be interesting to see the reaction if a major employer said...take the day off if you wish but it will be unpaid leave; for those who wfh and want to work, come into an office for the day.
Why would employers choose to pay employees to do nothing?
Good will?
Lazy post people won't be working... Again. 😉

To show their support for our wonderful monarchy and their loyal subjects as they march this great nation onwards and upwards into the sunlit uplands of Empire 2.0
God save the king!
Half-arsed discretionary public-holidays where schools are closed but employers aren't obliged really don't work do they. Farcical.
We'll be in France, so can't see us noticing it much....
It coincides with my non work day (9 day fortnight) which is meant to be sacrosanct. Now the bloody kids will be at home! Hopefully my wife will get the day off…..
We'll be by the beach. We were going anyway next weekend but this will give us an extra day and the weather looks pretty decent.
Is it actually a Bank Holiday. OP has it in quotation marks.
News articles from the last 4 days are obviously varied.
My employment contract is 25days AL + Bank holidays.
Government Bank Holiday Info Link
Monday 19 September, the date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral, will be a national bank holiday.
This will allow individuals, businesses and other organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate Her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning.
This bank holiday will operate in the same way as other bank holidays, and there is no statutory entitlement to time off. Employers may include bank holidays as part of a worker’s leave entitlement.
The bank holiday will take place across the United Kingdom.
Why would employers choose to pay employees to do nothing?
because we aren't the 51st state, yet.

aren't all Bank Holidays discretional under UK employment law.
will be up in Muir of Ord for a CX race on the Sunday
You should pop in to the chippie and sing "God Save the King" 😉 😀
anagallis - good will; what's that?
Staunch royalists here,so we're giving people the day off paid. Causes a bit of a pain as we run shifts, but these things don't happen often and we are more than happy to support it.
NHS here so we'll be working
I'm being told that the earlier vagueness from govt has now been removed and it is now a 'proper' bank holiday for all, with no employer discretion.
Self-employed.
What's a bank holiday again?
Getting over hernia surgery. Was hoping to spend the day alone quietly making a model kit with some bare bums and violence (Game of Thrones) on in the background.
All of this is now in tatters.
I’m being told that the earlier vagueness from govt has now been removed and it is now a ‘proper’ bank holiday for all, with no employer discretion.
Doesn't that require legislation to be passed?
I’m being told that the earlier vagueness from govt has now been removed and it is now a ‘proper’ bank holiday for all, with no employer discretion.
still not quite sure what that means.
Christmas day is a bank holiday and pretty much everything is shut beyond essential/emergency services, care homes and the like and a few hotels and petrol stations. May bank holiday is pretty much business as usual for all bar office workers.
I'll be working, but it'll be a very different day, with different tasks to do from today.
Only just got an appointment for an ultrasound at the local community docs in the next town over so I have to assume that will be cancelled but haven't heard anything yet. GPs are usually closed too so I wonder what happens to all those appointments that were booked as they are hard to come by for a lot of people.
I’m being told that the earlier vagueness from govt has now been removed
Where did you find this? I can't see an update.
My bosses aren't sure they'll let us have it off if it's discretionary 🤬
Self-employed.

It's something you don't get if you choose to be self employed.
Just like creative tax accounting isn't something you get the benefit of if you choose to be employed.
Swings and roundabouts I guess ?
Ooh, snarky.
@wooksterbo
I'm in a different part of the NHS but we will be working so surgery can still go ahead. I would have expected a global email by now with details which hasn't arrived yet so I expect that your community provider is in the same situation.
I wonder how many of these companies that have been offering sympathy on every social media platform known to man (self publicising!) will all of a sudden decide not to allow the bank holiday...
Just had an email from HR confirming next Monday is to be treated like any other Bank holiday - offices closed - only essential operations/call-outs to remain on-line - just like Sundays.

Only if they've run out of bread. And even then, only if you let them.

For the majority of the country with contracts that say "33 days annual leave including public holidays" or words to that effect it's effectively unpaid too. I've already booked my holiday for the year so if the office is closed it's unpaid.
I can't see many FacelessCorp Plc.'s just giving an ad-hock paid day off to all staff.
I work for an American multi national and I have been given a paid day off.

Didn't most faceless corps already give an extra paid couple of days for the diamond jubilee only a couple of months ago? I don't recall it creating massive acramony. I'd say the state are in quite a bit of credit after the furlough arrangements and business loans to get another one through without too much hand wringing.
It’ll be used as an excuse by the Government as to why the economy is tanking, another days output lost, no shops or anywhere open to spend your money, just sitting in collective misery because…
I work Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays but the Monday market I sell at is cancelled, so another day’s income lost.

Don't know where you work but everywhere I've worked that has "X days holiday inc bank holidays" means subtract 8 from the total and that's your bookable allowance. If you have to book bank holidays off yourself then that's not how it normally work for the majority of businesses who close on a bank holiday.

Was only one extra day, one was moved to fit.

Every contract I’ve ever had is xx days leave, plus bank/public holidays.

That's what I mean, just because Charlie proclaimed a bank holiday, doesn't mean we get an extra one in our allowance, it just moves from an effective 25+8 days to 24+9. Except I've already used 20 days and have to take 5 days off in December when the office closes for Jesus's birthday.

So your employer did that to you for the diamond jubilee? I'd say that's unusual.
Having said that I'm expected to work it too.
My wife is currently helping a very small SME turn into a slightly bigger SME. Her last gig was in the care sector. For obvious reasons the care sector has roles that can't have bank holidays off by default so company wide you got 29 days leave a year and booked them went you wanted/could. So in an office based role if you wanted to work the May bank holiday and have the following Monday off when the crowds were less of an issue you could. She's putting the same system into the SME and it's proving very popular.
We've been given the day off and the weather forecast is looking reasonable so I'll be out on the bike or paddle board. My daughter tells me she's off to London that day with her mother. I can't see the attraction in it personally. All those people...
Every contract I’ve ever had is xx days leave, plus bank/public holidays.
Pretty sure that's how mine is worded, although can't seem to find a copy...
I assume my appointment at the hospital ortho department will be postponed.
Back to Google to figure out how to treat myself in the meantime.
I work for a medium sized civil engineering firm - office and sites shut (full pay) 'as a mark of respect'
But I do have a good employer and its an attitude like that which means pretty much everyone who works here are long-termers
I'll probably watch some of it - not feeling the need avoid it for a political badge of honor
Funny how the same politicians who bleat about strikes are happy to lose a day's production with a Bh.
I'm retired so will be giving myself the day off 👍😁and as I'm not remotely interested I will make sure I'm nowhere near a TV 🙄
Employer hasn't decided yet if it'll be paid Bank Holiday, open and working as normal, or mandatory use of annual leave allowance! I don't think the last option will go down well...
My Big American Faceless Corp (TM) is giving us the day off.
I'm going to have a lie in (after staying up late to watch the NFL guilt free), a fry up and then take the dog out for a nice long walk.
Small business owner here (18 staff) and it didn't occur to me that I would do anything other than honour the holiday. Staff goodwill is worth much more to me than trying to find a way to minimise the impact.

Americans love the royal family. My place is shutting the offices, but I think the operations and warehousing are open as usual

Bit like Bad Aids...
Americans love the royal family.
I heard an anecdote where an American boss sent his UK minions a condolence email saying how great Elizabeth was and how fabulous her defeat of the Armada.
Not sure how true it is. Gotta love lazy people and Wikipedia though
Civil Service is having the day off to pay our respects to The Boss.
Need to check the actual timing of the service out of politeness, and see if any local cafes that I ride to have done the same....
I’m planning to be up a mountain. A potential good day to do Snowdon ?
Just of the phone with a colleague who is a staunch republication he was going to go into work as he felt hypocritical taking the day off. Convinced him that spending a nice day off riding his bike away from the media coverage on Liz, was a much better thing to do.
Will head round a friends with the family on Sunday for a party as its been impossible to plan for a year or so due to at least one person already being busy. The free mandatory day off at short notice means everyone is free, then booked golf for the Monday within seconds of the BH being announced
My Big American Faceless Corp (TM) is giving us the day off.
Mine too. I shall be putting the fun into funeral by throwing myself down the finest trails the FoD has to offer.
I’m planning to be up a mountain. A potential good day to do Snowdon ?
I'm liking that idea, but alas it's September and hence banned during the day.
Though it is fun to imagine the apoplectic rage of the red sox to you doubly desecrating the day.
This place will obviously be the contrary outlier, but it will be very interesting to see what percentage of the UK actually use the BH for watching it and generally being a bit sad face.
On a positive side, there'll be another one next year for the coronation.
