Not the ST poster.

Mogwai have always passed me by when thinking of buying a new album (old skool, I know), and that seems really lazy of me given how much I seem to like their tunes when I know that's what I'm listening to.

Anyway, their latest, Ether from the new album not yet released has got me happy, but if I wanted to get into Mogwai, given how much they have produced over the years, where should I start album-wise - and WHY?

I'd just grab Central Belters tbh, the albums are all good IMO but the standout tracks are spread out all across the years. I'm not usually one for "best ofs" but it's a great collection.

Special Moves (the last live album) is worth picking up too, as long as you get the full version (ie LP or download) not the weirdly truncated CD release that loses batcat and helicon.

I'd agree re Central Belters. But it's more of a retrospective than a best of.

Seeing how it's a 3 cd set, it's probably as much as most people would need.

I got Come on die young when it came out and then, well nothing... It getting nicked (along with ~500 other CDs) didn't help. Saw them live ~5 years ago. Interest rekindled with Les Revenants soundtrack (played that a lot). Kind of working backwards now.

I agree with Northwind.

Also, if you see that they're playing a gig anywhere near you, get tickets.

The problem with asking fans who already know the music is that you tend to get the recommendations that mean most to them.

I started with Hawk is Howling and it still means a lot to me, as its associated with a particularly happy time in my life. Overall though Zidane: a 21st Century Portrait is my go to favourite.

And to chuck another one in, my favourite is probably Happy Songs for Happy People. If you enjoy Mogwai, you probably won't go far wrong with any of the albums.

My CD/DVD copy came with a code to download the extra tracks. I don't know if this mucks around with the track order though.

Yeah, for me, essential is "EP" - I had it on headphones in hospital while on morphine. My god, that noise at the end of "Stanley Kubrick" still freaks me out!
Happy Songs for Happy People would be my album recommendation.
