4 guys at work will watch TV shows together - nothing strange about that.
They hook up via skype from their own homes, synchronise starting the show, then talk about it while watching it
I've never felt so out of touch.
Bizarre.
Genuine youth (25) here.
It's weird.
I know, I find often need the support of my peers when enjoying Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
I get it but it feels odd.
Bit like people chatting on a forum?
that is strange.
do they not like beer?
They're winding you up mate.
Surely?
Go on then, what show?
I have heard of this BTW, in a previous life as a writer for a yoof content provider.
We have guys at work, embarrassingly some of them are in their 40's, who all go online on a friday night, despite living in same town, and play GTA, often just driving about apparently. They do this whilst getting drunk on cheap lager and then take the mick out of each other on a monday as to who passed out online first and started snoring!
it's like the pub had never been invented...
Being social virtually rather than physically? Perfectly normal.
Talking during TV and movie shows? First against the wall when I'm in charge.

One of those guys is you, isn't it.
Sounds like a good night to me.
I thought you were in charge cougar - don't shoot me please
We used to do that when i were a kid.
Only we would get take out and go round to one of our houses.....
Likewise with halo......You'd take yer telly and Xbox round to a mates and shoot shit out of each others on Lan.

So much this.
Sounds a bit mad unless they are watching some reality thing that requires zero concentration. If it's something like The Wire then that's just not right.

That sounds like a good laugh!

Are they kicking themselves that if they realised they could just record it and put it on youtube they'd basically have invented gogglebox?
Sounds like quite a good idea actually. Much less hassle than actually travelling around to meet up, you can have a drink without worrying about driving etc. I don't do the chatting over tv thing personally but each to his own.

I think there is something strange about that.. Sport, fair enough but I would never get together with my mates to watch tele.
so ****ing annoying when people talk when I watch tv.
My 19 old son did this with YouTube, when I suggested they get together and plug the PC into the TV, his answer was "Nah, we can find more stuff when we're all searching separately"
Who talks over the TV? If you're talking then you're not watching.
My wife tries to hold conversations with me when we're watching something. Then I have to pause it because if I'm not concetrating then I'll miss something and have no idea what's going on.
It can take us well over an hour to watch a 40 minute episode if she's in a chatty mood!
Could be a thing.
Maybe we should create a STW Skype chat room where we can all log in, and see how long it takes to create a [s]pointless insulting immoral argument[/s] interesting debate.
Ask them how many times a day, on average, they phone their mum?

I supposed it'd work for something like Top Gear. Or sports - I did the same thing with a mate watching the Superbowl last year.
Is it Gardners' World? I'd do that to discuss Monty's various magnificent sheds.
He occasionally shows his dirt box in one of them.

Why do they need to phone her? She's upstairs in her bedroom.
Oh my god, have you seen that thread over on STW about people chatting over Skype whilst watching TV on a Friday night in their own homes? What sort of a loser would converse online instead of meeting up?
Edit: Wrong forum š³
We invited two (younger by over a decade) friends over last week for pizza and board game. They declined - preferring to stay at their respective homes and use (suspiciously slimmer, it has to be said) PS3 avatars to kick my arse all over a virtual Los Angeles while gloating live via a FaceTime video-conference š
I've now met the future and it clearly doesn't like me.
My kids do the synchro watching while skyping, didn't know anyone over 20 would be doing it. Mostly old Dr Who and Sherlock and stuff they've all seen before. It's odd.
A large proportion of my social life happens on Skype, because my girlfriend lives on the dark side of the moon. I'd not tolerate Skyping someone who lived within getting to them range though. š

That's what I was thinking...

Sounds like a good way to socialise.
When you pass out from too much beer, you're home.
You never have to drink a round you didn't want, and best of all you don't have to suffer in the miasma of your mate's vile smelly farts.
This new connected world has some pluses... š

So it is a thing!!
Wow.
I can perhaps see point, sort of - I used to pop over a friends house or they'd come to mine once a week, but with kids and stuff happening it just doesn't happen now. Maybe some contact, however virtual is better than none?
I do exchange the odd whatsapp with friends about TV shows, but the problem is given the way TV works these days we're never all at the same point.
A bunch of guys at our place go to the cinema together. What's that all about, sitting in silence in a darkened room for two hours? What sad sacks they must be, they might as well be on their own.
check.embarrassingly
checksome of them are in their 40's
checkwho all go online on a [s]friday[/s] Saturday night, despite living in same town
check!and play GTA
checktastic!!!!!!often just [s]driving about[/s] 'MTBing' together over Vinewood Hills apparently.
To be fair, still not being physically capable of riding in real life it's the best weekend blast I've had for 12 months. At least this way I get to steal a jet if I lose my bike in the river/sea/gigantic explosion. Then just fly home and get a replacement.
You should hear what they say about Friday EDL.
(sparkling water / the hum of the fridge / M&M's)

This is an interesting one for me, in that my friends don't all live in the same town.
I could easily go and visit a mate, but it'd probably be the one friend rather than friends as getting a group together would involve a number of people driving for an hour or two. Then people might not be able to have a drink as they can't crash over because of various family commitments, meaning another couple of hours' drive home again.
It was different when we were 20, no ties, all within spitting distance of each other and your requirements for a bed was "flat, and if possible dry." These days, getting a group together to do something when everyone's free is a challenge (I've just done this in fact, there's five of us including myself and the first free weekend we can all make is in May.)
Or alternatively, we can fire up a console with two minutes' notice, grab a headset, and spend a bit of quality time with old friends at the other end of the county who we've not seen in six months.
My brother's PS4 (GTA/shootemup) crew arent all even in the same country.
They have a psycho Socttish chap who's always worth it in a meleĆ© š
Good, it's not just me who thinks it's odd.
They spend 8 hours a day working together, go home, logon to Skype and watch whatever sci-fi/superhero low rent TV show is on the go at the moment together.
Weirdly, 2 of them live with their girlfriends. The other two stay at home, they're all in their mid to late twenties.
I knew they would play videogames together, because it's all they talk about at work for hours on end, but this TV thing seemed really odd.
Some guys at my work ride bikes online racing each other. Bit like an xbox with a turbo trainer. They live near each other too and are in their 40s.
WTAF??
Right I'm up for some of this.
Sam Friers the Mummy Diaries, Thursday, who else is in? We could talk about our feelings and shit.
Was going to do a PSA thread 8)
That sounds like a good laugh!
It is. š
