Anyone remember Repton? I used to have great fun playing on my Acorn Electron (Repton 3 specifically, perhaps the only game I have ever completed).

What would be a modern equivalent for xbox or pc? i.e. a game that is about thinking ahead, puzzle solving, without gore / violence (a few squashed monsters aside), probably has a team-playing element now, that might keep a pre-teen occupied for a few hours and isn't Fortnite / Battlefield etc?

Where did Civilisation get to? Is that still going?

As you can tell, I haven't really kept pace with gaming, but there seems to be lots of violence, lots of arcade-type 'quick reactions' games, but relatively few fun strategy / puzzle solving options?

There are loads of indie games available for download on Xbox and pc -almost endless choice and usually fairly cheap. The Portal games are really good arcade puzzlers. I enjoy Braid as well, and Unravel both puzzle platform games

Civ is still going, it's a monster of a game. I had to stop myself playing because it is just too good it eats spare time. There was a cut down version called Civ360 on the Xbox 360, but works on Xbox one, which is really fun without ruining your life.

I used to play repton on the electron. Loved it.
Nowadays I mainly stick to battlefield as I like the teamwork you get when in a skilled squad.

Try any of the xcom games. Turn based strategy games which can get tricky later in the game.

Also have a look on Steam under the strategy section. There should be something to try there.

Most of them are hanging about on the Playstation Store for £7.99 or so. Or it's tablet/phone games. Remember though that you aren't 12 years old any more. This changes how you view games. Some stuff I played compulsively back then just doesn't hold interest any more.

And Civ is rubbish. Pretty simple game model, not far removed from a board game IMO. At least, the one my wife plays.

Portal is brilliant.

If you haven't played it and you like puzzle games, then try it immediately.
