Painting my stairs and hall etc , all nicely sanded and cleaned, using Crown satin paint , says on tin do not stir ?? ... opened it and had to stir as all separated, started painting and even though its quite thick the paint has no body , rubbish coverage to say the least even putting plenty on 🙁 ...
Did use dulux in my lounge last year and that was poor as well, hence me trying crown paints , any good coverage satin paints out there ?
We used wickes own, took 3 coats to go from dark grey to white which isn't too bad (2 would probably have been acceptable for a satin finish).
Paints are all a bit worse than they used to be thanks to regulations on the amounts of oil based solvents they can use.
Once we have brexit we can go back to destroying the ozone layer, people lungs and watercourses as according to Farage domestic companies not exporting shouldn't have to deal with all these regulations.
Never had any trouble with Dulux Trade. Not sure if they do a satin finish.
Try sikkens paint. I use that on my jobs, much better finish and quality. But can be tricky to find in shops sometimes.
Recently used leyland trade satinwood and was impressed fwiw
I don't know about gloss but I'd always regarded Farrow and Ball as just an "I saw you coming" overpriced marketing firm. But a customer painted a cabinet I'd built for her in one of their finishes last week and I was mightily impressed by it. I'm going to try it myself next time I have a suitable opportunity.
Wickes "Trade" acrylic white was awful and required five coats to successfully turn white in to a slightly different shade of white.
Just make sure it isn't water based gloss. All rubbish in my experience. Gloss needs solvents in it.
I'm renovating a house currently and bought a huge tin of that Crown Satin.....may as well have used milk, absolutely awful stuff! My old man does this sort of thing for a living and rates Dulux Trade as the best other than Farrow and Ball
All of the paints you buy from the big DIY sheds are rubbish. They have less pigment/solids in them but they add thickeners in to make you think they are quality paints, but how runny paint is has nothing to do with it.
If you go to a proper decorators merchants they will sell Dulux Trade (my favourite) and Crown trade paint. My local one does McPhersons trade stuff - their white Eclipse paint is amazing for new plaster and their whites gloss and satin is wonderful. F&B and Little Green paints are also fantastic quality too but expensive - they do lovely colours. The local merchants will also sell quality brushes and rollers for waaaaay cheaper than the big places.
I worked in the DIY retail trade for a long time and I’d never buy from anywhere other than a local merchants.
