My new van doesn't have a convenient cup holder to perch my phone like the old one, so I need an unobtrusive mount for a fairly big phone, (Moto G4, 5.7 inch) I think the best place is on the top of the door card near the front door pillar.

The number of choices on Amazon is mindboggling, so I'm hoping one of you can help narrow it down for me. Ta.

Isn’t it always in your left hand whilst driving ?

So..

Brodit mounts are brilliant. I'd get a universal holder to screw to it.

No, I prefer to play pocket billiards with my left hand, it's why I bought an automatic.

Brodit +1

Simple, solid mounts.

I added a magnet to it, I wish I had this set up for years before....

I’ve hit a little Anker magnetic ball mount on my dash. Discrete, looks okay without the phone on it, works very well and holds the phone in a convenient place where I can use it as a sat nav.

Only downside is that I think it probably buggers up the compass in the phone.

Attaches with a very sticky pad - but does need decent smooth surface to get a good stick.

If you plan on getting something that you aren't planning on removing all the time, then I recently bought this mount, and would recommend it:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0792Z94FF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The suction cup is strong, but it also has a sticky coating on it. This thing is going nowhere in a hurry - I had to re-position it a couple of times and it doesn't seem to leave a residue, although not sure what'll happen once it's been on for a while.
You mention door card, but I think this will have to either go on the windscreen, or relatively flat bit of dash.

It fits my Lenovo P2 in it's silicone case, which measures 78x157mm and there's room to spare if needed.
The arm is extendable, which might be useful in a van, as the screen can be quite far away.

This

https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductMobileDisplay?catalogId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=318425&productId=1388364&storeId=10001

Holds an iPhone 8 Plus with ease and takes a fair amount of force to remove said phone!

Also holds a Lenovo pad too.

I have a magnet one that clips into the air vent. Phone has never fallen off, it is exactly the right place and the magnet / metal strip has never interfered with the phone.

TK Maxx have a range nice n cheap. I got one for about 4quid.

Like this , but it clamps anywhere cos the clamp bit is sprung.

Brodit, but dont screw the phone mount to it - fix it with a “moveclip” so that you can easily change the mount if you need to.  Ours swaps between phone mount and SatNav mount (and used to sometimes have an iPod on it)

Make sure you look at the full range of phone mounts - they have them sized to fit IPhone both “naked” and allowing for a case.

The challenge I have with things like this, is the phone case changes the size of the phone, so almost need a universal one rather than one specifically designed for the phone

Ah brill, thanks. I've been looking at the stick on/magnet type but hadn't come across the Brodit. They look pretty good, will investigate further.

The Spigen ones, think my phone is just a bit wide, and there really very little flat bits, apart from right in the drivers eyeline and I don't want it there.

I've got the round magnetic ones made by both Ailun and Aukey, I assume there is a factory in China churning them out with a hundred different names on. Works really well and Satnav seems to work fine so compass isn't too badly affected/doesn't matter too much anyway.
