I'm looking to save money as 2+ years ago ended up refreshing everyone's phone contract with EE, and getting new iPhones for everyone hence ending up with fairly pricey plans for everyone. Now those contracts are up I had a look at options. For context 'family' means me (regular user but look after my phone so it's still in good nick and battery seems fine, would quite like an iPhone version with LIDAR as it could be useful (but more than likely amusing) to get 3D cave surveys.. Wife (v light user, throws phone in handbag but in a case so it's still good as far as I can tell, doesn't need a new one) and then two teenagers one of whom can get through 40Gb of data a month, both phones have battery issues as they get hammered.

The way I've worked it is that my plan has 100Gb of data and I share it as needed. Happy to continue to do this.

At one time, when we moved in to our current house, Three was a non starter due to complete lack of signal here. EE has been fine, although I did find it to be severely lacking in Buxton a few times. Spend a lot of time in the Peak and remote areas generally.

Just looked at EE and it seems the model has changed. All the plan prices seem reasonable but then the phone cost is extra..

Wife can have SIM only, I could potentially go SIM only for 12 months provided it has enough data.

Anyone have any recommendations for a: Options to get new phones without a massive monthly bill, b: networks that have the best 'outdoor' coverage.

I know that in reality I'll pay for the phone somehow, and that buying a phone and adding a separate sim only card is probably the easiest option but I'm exploring the possibilities... and that getting new iphones isn't really compatible with saving money, but I still live in the 90s when networks would give you a phone as a sweetener to go with them 🙂

We took out multiple cheap SIMS - it was cheaper (we paid 99p a month for 6 months for 15gb data and unlimited calls and texts, now a reasonable £6.90 a month) and long term it meant when the kids turned 18 it was easy to transfer the account into their name as we used their email addresses to create the accounts. The kids did not have their passwords.

The kids got very good at monitoring data use and logging onto wifi wherever possible...

We also bought pretty budget handsets and never replaced them if they were damaged through uncaring actions - again our kids got very good at really looking after their handset and saving up for a posher one....

A shame you are on Apple as some of Google's family products and linked things are just brilliant these days.

Another top tip - look at things like Spotify Family as again they have their own account and saved music which they retain when they turn 18, rather than 'borrowing' your account. This applies for many products now.

Call EE and talk to them about what you are looking for. I've found they're pretty good about getting you a deal that you will not get via the website.

Also, beforehand, find a deal with some other provider that you can ask them to match (even if it's only for a single SIM).

Tell whomever you are talking to at EE that you're thinking of leaving, you've seen this other deal... IME they transfer you to someone knowledgable very quickly.

New refurbed phones from CEX or Loop Mobile and sim only plans from Smarty, with 10% off for shared accounts. Oh and I've DM'd you 🙂

At one time, when we moved in to our current house, Three was a non starter due to complete lack of signal here.

Aahh - you could use wifi calling though.

We all just have £10 a month each deal with Giff Gaff which even my son never clears out of data (though not 40gb worth!), and paid for cheap, but good enough for us bought mobiles, they have Moto g8 or something , and I have a black view 5900.

Thanks everyone.. I did a bit of looking and I'll definitely be talking to EE first along with the ace looking deal Tesco seem to be offering... should have thought of that in the first place @GHill Just saw smarty aswell ots - I'd be wary of trying anything Three related, who knows they may have improved in ten years but there's always a time when 4G has to go on until the router stops playing up
