Right I get that a load of trades and companies get vehicles as it's a cost effective way to do it via the business... however I'm a web developer and I want a "mobile office" there's no rules I can see against this strictly...

Who's right is it to say that I don't want to drive to Scotland to be inspired by the highlands whilst I code up a clients site? Surely it's the equivilant of going on a research trip?

As these things aren't clear cut it would appear my question is.. shall I or sharnt I?

Cheers now!

Alex

You could have a car for driving around visiting client sites and delivering presentations or working with other developers.

Exactly like that mobile office yes!

I don't want to go and visit clients - I just want to do it for a nice place to be whilst working. It really annoys me that the letter of the law isn't very flexible when it comes to computer based jobs. Surely if I want to spend 100% of my turnover on travelling to new office locations then I should be allowed that company lifestyle?

Do I need to find a bohemian accountant / landy enthusiast?

I read somewhere about an architect who took loads of photos of buildings while on holiday, so he could justify writing off a fraction of the cost of the holiday against tax, as it was research.

PE teachers can claim tax back for the cost of their work clothes but I as a physics teacher can't, despite naked teaching being frowned upon.

We spent more on our house so that I'd have somewhere to work at home, but can't claim anything.

Would it be your only work premises?

I still don't think you can get away with paying yourself rent on it....

"Wholly and Exclusively" is the term that HMRC will use and kick your mobile office into touch as nothing but a benefit in kind. It will be treated as car for Capital Allowances and P11D benefits.

Same goes for mileage claims with a trip to Scotland for inspiration. Please do it though as I love reading these type of claims in the journals as what not to do.

if you drive a 101 up to Scotland regularly then you will need to put your prices up or go bankrupt!
