Apologies in advance for this... Background:

- On a sim-only contract with O2 and my own Oneplus 5 phone.

- Data connection turns itself on for a short time and then off again. I noticed because I'm getting notifications with data and WiFi disabled.

- After speaking in depth to the code developers at Oneplus, they explained that this is a feature of the O2 network called SES. It requires the data connection to be on to register with the service every few hours. O2 have specified that Oneplus must have this feature accounted for in their software from the Oreo update onwards. This is when this started happening.

- Speaking to O2, they say they have never heard of the SES service and say it's a phone issue.

Getting nowhere with either of them. Where next? Ombudsman? Bombers/shoe urination being considered.

Never heard of it, but you're not alone.

I think if it were me my first step would be to ask OnePlus what SES stands for.

Indeed - been scouring those forums as well - seems to be OnePlus - specific. Weird.

Very difficult as both companies deny it's their issue. Hmm.

Got the background but what's the problem?

In Oz, SES is the state emergency service (who send out bushfire notifications etc). Not sure why 02 would need it though.

Maybe a feature that is added to OnePlus phones as they are sold around the world, not just specific countries?

Emergency Alert

Emergency Alert is the national telephone warning system used by emergency services.

Emergency services may send you an emergency warning message about fire, flood or extreme weather events to your landline or mobile.

The Emergency Alert service is available across all telephone networks.

You do not need to register for Emergency Alert.

Learn more about this system at emergencyalert.gov.au.

Can you borrow a SIM on another network and see whether the issue persists?

Is it actually using any of your data allowance when it's doing this?

Not got a OnePlus phone but have a root around in the SIM / mobile network settings and look for something called "Emergency Alerts" or "Emergency Warnings", and turn it off.

Thanks for the replies folks.

Giallograle - the problem is that when I turn my data off, I want it off! When this issue turns the data on and off again, I get a ton of notifications and it uses up my data. Also, I need to have data off at work (security) but still need to make calls - this is currently breaching this policy.

aphex_2k - that's interesting - good to know - thanks. Will look into it.

drlex - have tried this - only happen on O2 or any O2-piggyback carriers. Also does not happen with an O2 sim in another phone. Odd.

PrinceJohn - data is being used in that it turns on the data connections and anything with permissions gets notifications, updates etc. I'd rather not go through everything on the phone and disable data permissions for everything, though I could do.

Do you have a monthly data allowance of 16kB?

I appreciate it's irritating and against work policy, but if you're worrying about data usage from app notifications I'd respectfully suggest that the problem there isn't the notifications. I drove to London and back the other weekend using Google Maps and my total data usage for the day was about 60kB. My monthly data usage is less than 400MB and I never turn mobile data off.

I'd watch Android versions here. It could be that it's only doing it on Oreo rather than only doing it on the OnePlus handsets.

I found this in a corner of the Internet: Look in Developer Options for a setting "Mobile Data Always Active."

(Settings /System / About phone / tap Build number several times to enable dev opts.)

Thanks Cougar - that setting is already off.

Yeah, android version is noteable. Oneplus admit that this 'feature' was implemented in Oreo onwards to comply with O2. Nougat, for example, was fine. And yes, I tried to downgrade to this and it bricked my phone! Had to get Oneplus remote support to recover it...

Oneplus are now saying they are looking into it once again and are very sorry. I must say their customer support has been very good, albeit the issue persists. O2 have been less than helpful.

Latest reply:

Thank you for getting back. Hayden here.

About your inquiry, at the moment we do not have any concrete information of what SES really means and what it is for. All we know is that this is basically one system that is causing this issue to happen.

Which we are really trying to sort out with our software engineers. Based on our own research SES stands for: Société Européenne des Satellites.

With regards to its purpose, right now we really don't have that information if this has something to do with emergency alerts feature, for our issue is your phone's mobile data turns on automatically to receive notifications from applications.

At this point we are still working on finding the solution to have this corrected. Please allow us to make this right and have this corrected and sorted out.

We ask for your patience for this case, rest assured once we find the answer to what's causing this and the steps on how fix it, we will certainly relay the information to you.

Again, thank you for time and patience and for continually patronizing OnePlus.

Best regards,
Hayden
