Hi all,

I've spent hours researching this but as in most cases... I always come back to the folk of STW! 🙂

My son is turning 6 this week and I'd like to get him a little device to play games on. He's always asking for my iPhone (I do limit the amount of time he has on it).

Does anyone have any suggestions between the iPod Touch 6th Gen and the Samsung Galaxy S5 (without SIM of course). Budget is about £100 so buying used.

He likes all the games on the Apple Store and I suspect Play Store will have similar games for him.

I'm slightly more in favour of the S5 because the iPod screen is a bit smaller than I'd like and it's slower than the S5. However, I'd like the convenience of same charging cable for all our devices (Apple).

What are your thoughts?

We visited our friends who have a little one. She grabbed our iPad and wanted some games to play.
It seemed that whatever free game you downloaded it would lead to link after link for paid games. It was like watching kids telly on a saturday morning.
I can't vouch for Play Store kid's games but I was horrified by the apple onslaught.

I bought my daughter an Amazon Kindle Fire Kids edition. About the same price for a new device with 2 years guarantee regardless of how you broke it and a years subscription to a filtered games and video service that you can't run up a bill or view dodgy stuff.

I wouldn't spend 100 quid on a soon to be five generations old Samsung handset.

I take your point about the Kindle Fire. TBH he already has one - about 2 years old (to him) and not sure when they were released. It is quite clunky and he much prefers the games that he downloads on our phones (I don't blame him).

You can still buy an iPod Touch 6th Gen new - and they were released in 2015 if I'm not mistaken. The S5 was released just before in 2014 and has better specs.

Is the Kindle one actually linked to a "kids subscription"? If that doesn't have the games he likes they are probably still in the Amazon store anyway, or with a bit of fidding you can install the Google play store on it. Aside form being free and child friendly none of the apps through the kids thing have adverts or stop abruptly requiring you to pay extra. There also books and so on.

Word of warning - battery life on the (well, my) iPod Touch is hopeless!

Nintendo switch?

Or DS. My 5 year old has pretty much taken over ownership of mine, I'm actually afraid to race her in Mario Kart now.

Another recommendation for a new Kindle fire kids edition which includes the subscription.

Pretty much all the games my son wants to play are on it and no adverts.

If his current one is a hand me down it will be very clunky and slow in comparison to a new one.

Alternatively the second hand Nintendo

Buy a Kindle Fire, and subscribe to Fire for Kids Unlimited for £2/mo.

The problem with the kids games in the regular Android store is that they are either advertising material for companies (e.g. the Lego ones) which is not bad in itself, or they are scams to try and milk the parents for cash. They are full of in-game purchase options OR they are plastered with the most incredibly intrusive ads and dodgy crap. It becomes a depressing experience after a while.

With Fire for Kids Unlimited, you get free unlimited access with no ads to basically all the games that are worth playing for kids that age, including the Toca Boca ones. It really is far better and well worth £2 a month.

If you get a fire go for the one with more internal memory. It makes life easier.

Oh and you can still download most normal paid-for games on it e.g. Terraria, Minecraft, and they work fine.
