We are going to France and want to use the laptop. We are on 3 so can use our phones for free, but tethering is not allowed. Our accommodation doesn't have WiFi. What's our best option?
I'd check tethering, I'm on three and can weather after I rung up and asked.
Check with 3, tethering is allowed with my phone/contract but limited to 4gb/month (I think). You should be fine
Did check but not allowed abroad.
Three customer and in France a lot, tethering not allowed. IME pay as you go sim need a local bank account so thats not an option. Another stw-er was able to rent a mobile wifi device with data (not France) so you could see if thats possible. Sorry I cant be of more help.
McDonalds, buy a coffee & sit there for a few hours.
Plentiful in France I've found... Clearly no good if you want to watch Netflix in your Gite....
is the EU tethering ban from 3 a new thing? The year before last I was streaming a film on the laptop via a mobile one wet evening.
Get a 3 mifi and put your phone sim into it (or get a data sim for the holiday).
Never worked for me - it comes up with a forbidden message - for the last 2+ years / as long as they've had the free feel at home

I could try that as an experiment but my 3 mifi is large size sim - as above to get a data sim you need a French bank account - also a mifi is what £75 upfront ?
You can get an adapter to make your sim full size.
Mifi's can be got for about £30 or less I think.
France is one of the 3 'at home' countries so just buy a data sim over here .... or am I missing something?
I've double checked the 3 website. You can not tether abroad even if you can in the UK. My monthly plan allows me 12gb a month abroad, but only on my phone.
There aren't many alpine resorts with a McDonald's.
You can tether abroad in three, you just need to be sneaky about it. Install a proxy app on your phone 😉

You sure? Doesn't every bar have free WiFi? Alp dheuz pool cafe was the favourite spot for broken brits on laptops
