With a bit of luck I might be able to spend a few weeks in the Pyrenees this year. I've never done it before so I was wondering if my mobile banking app will work ok - it's a UK high street bank?

Shouldn't be any problem.

I can't see why there would be a problem as long as you have WiFi or a 3/4/5G type connection.  Are you trying to do something special like use your phone directly to pay for things or is this just a general will the app function to pay bills/check balance type question

Generally everything works the same as the UK, except some unattended petrol stations which sometimes don't like UK issued cards. Although last time we went they all seemed to work...

In my experience no it won't. They wont tell you why but it will just generate lots of weird errors and never actually connect!

Although having a VPN back to the UK so they cant tell your abroad fixed that for me!

no issues,

gambling apps like skybet wont work, although if you use a VPN like tunnelbear to make it look like you are in the UK and log on via a browser it works..

^ if you're on mobile data it'll appear to all apps liek you're in the UK. VPN is only needed on wifi

I just want to pay bills as and when they come in. They are a bit random otherwise i'd set up a direct debit

I use both Lloyds and Barclays apps regularly in Europe with no issues at all. I've paid a couple of invoices today from Switzerland.

I really can't see any reason why that wouldn't work.  I do that all the time when I visit the UK from Belgium.  But just phone your bank if you are unsure, they are usually great with that and will know if there is any geo blocking going on but for paying bills, especially ones you have paid before, I can't see why there would be a problem

Just make sure the banks phone app is actually installed on your phone before leaving the UK.

I've had problems in the past trying to install the Nationwide app outside the UK* but if it's installed it works ok

*eg you decide to buy a new phone when in France

If you're paying bills as and when they come in (as opposed to having to wait until you can afford it), is that not exactly what Direct Debit is for?

If you're making payments, the only thing you might see is an increase in the number of 'step-up' challenges, i.e. being asked to input characters from your passcode/memorable word/password etc when you request the payment. This is because the fraud systems that monitor all the payment requests may see a request from abroad as slightly unusual and want to check that it's actually you making the payment.
