I've found a local club to join and do some training to supplement the cycling I do, especially over winter. I don't plan to do any real fighting just get fitter and cross train really.
Used to do a bit of kickboxing and tried BJJ when I was younger but don't have any of the kit any more.
Any recommendations on cheapish stuff to use? I have quite a few base layers etc from cycling but don't know how they will stand up to grappling....

Normal base layers will never stand up. Not thick enough.

Usually plenty of sale stuff at Made4Fighters

Personally I use

Twins shin pads and gloves for thai/boxing
Scramble rash guards & Gi
Bad Boy MMA sparring gloves
