Morning folks,
Has anyone got any experience of Ford’s Powershift auto gearboxes?
I’m in the market for a larger car and sadly the 130i will be sold shortly for something bigger and more practical. I’ve only ever owned manuals in the past but I got on really well with an automatic hire car recently and decided that my next motor will have one.
I’m looking at a 2011ish Mondeo Mk4 Titanium With the 2.0 TDCi (161bhp) and believe it has a “wet clutch”. I’m not particularly mechanically minded but have done a little research and get the impression that the Powershift dry clutch boxes (in fiestas and focus etc) are not particularly reliable.
Anyone have any experiences of the wet clutch boxes?
Wife uses the car for daily commute 12 mile each way. Mostly empty rural roads
Box is good to use but if buying second hand make sure it's been serviced as per the book. Needs oil and filter change every 30k
Is the 130i going for sensible money??
Thanks smokey, will be making sure services are up to date etc.
Haven’t really done any research into the 130i’s value yet. I’ve been putting off selling it for as long as I can! It’s Le Man Blue, 55 plate, 85k on it. Interested?
If it could get away with it i'd swap you for a 2014 Mondeo Estate Titanium X 161bhp Powershift............. probably shouldn't at the moment though
I've had that car for 18months or so now. Gearbox does seem pretty good, and sure enough it's having the oil/filter done this week. Can be a bit clunky pulling away, but technique sorts that right out tbh (just dont stab the throttle), i'm wondering if the fresh oil might help too.
It's fairly dumb for a dual-clutch, Ford was/is very much pitching it for comfort and economy rather than performance. Sport mode helps a bit (and of course you can put it in manual)
Are you sure you couldn’t be tempted Mashr?
PM me if you want some more detail on the 130i.
What maintenance do these Powershift wet clutches need? Oil and filters? How often and how much££?
Sadly not, also bought the Mondeo for practical child/bike carrying reasons so will need to keep it for a while yet
Bump for the evening STWers.
Keen to start enquiring about a few that I’ve got my eye on but would like to know what key services items to keep an eye out for. Looking at the 2012ish and less than 60k ballpark
Yes it's a wet clutch and comments are basically correct. It's OK, not as good round town as the VAG DSG but acceptable A/B/Mway. Reliability is ok if looked after so history and previous owners important.
But the mondeos are great all rounders so you can Learn to live with it, but get the manual unless you have to have an auto.
Agree with the above, walk away if it’s not had the fluid changes done at the right time.
I have the Focus diesel power shift and I absolutely love it.
Fluid change is just over £300.
Replacement gear box is over £4K.
The box is the same through the range but the petrol engines use a dry clutch and the problem is that one rubber seal fails and let’s gearbox fluid contaminate the clutch pack.
Gearboxes are reliable if they have the fluid changed at the right time
Don’t rely on “full dealer service history” meaning it’s been done. A gearbox fluid change is a chargeable extra to the official service schedule so many owners don’t bother. If it’s been main dealer serviced then they can check on the computer to see if it’s been done.
