I have a 54 plate TDI Octavia that last night on the way home got quite hot but not dangerously. I thought it was the temp sensor so I changed that. This morning it hit 130 climbing a hill should be 90. Have swapped thermostat which was opening but not very far. It's still overheats. The top radiator hose is hot and the bottom hose is cold. I also have no heat in the cabin from the heater. I think it is either a blocked radiator or a failed water pump. Any suggestions how to try and diagnose which as both are pretty labour intensive to get out.

did the temp go up quite high then go down again or is it staying high. Sounds more like the radiator issues.

MK3 Octavia here. Common issue on the diesel is the water pump going kaput. Happened on mine and the temp gauge would shoot up into the red after 10 minutes of driving. Got lots of lights on the dash and binging sounds. Dunno if that's any help.

Can you pop the bottom hose off the rad and see how much crud comes out with the water?

My gut would say water pump, don't know your car's mileage but if it wasn't changed out last time the timing belt was done, more than likely it that what's shagged. The original waterpumps on these used a plastic impeller and were a known weak point
