Hi all,
My saw died today (crappy old Evolution thing...) and I'm on a job where I need it.
Tomorow morning I was dead set on running off to screwfix to get a Dewalt DWS 773. It has good reviews and is light. It has a 216mm blade though which seems quite small; i rarely cut anything but 2x4's...but you never know.
The alternative is a Makita ls1040 which is the same price. Looks to be a little more agricultural in design and has quite alot of grunt when the machine starts...but it also has a 260mm blade.
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice? I need to pick one up at 8 tommorow morning... so am not going to go shopping on amazon etc.
the dewalt has been around for a long time (is it even a throw back to when dewalt bought ELU back in the 80s?) might well mean its well tried and tested I guess. However at the cheaper end of the market I tend to avoid sliding saws if accurate cuts matter - unless the structure is sound and the rollers /bushes are excellent then they can stray quite a long way off the line when you're cutting - especially ones where the handle is off set to the side of the blade.
So for me - unless that extra capacity matters then choosing between sliding and non sliding saws of approx the same price I'd go for the non-slider unless I was buying from somewhere I can handle the goods
The makita is fine although it really kicks when its starting up - worth having it screwed down to the bench when you're using it
The only other option that screwfix offer in that price range thats maybe worth having a look at is the Hitachi - if only for the reason that having the handle horiziontal rather than vertical is more comfortable if you are doing a lot of cutting
I have the dws780. The extra capacity has come in handy occasionally, but is overkill the vast majority of the time.
