Just opened a letter to see that not only have I been summonsed for forgetting to pay my small business rates, but that the court date was yesterday.

Crap.

i'll phone the council in the morning, but has anyone else been in this or similar situations? Any tips for how I can extricate myself without damaging my wallet too badly? Or being sent to HMP Siberian Gulag?

The really annoying thing is that i'm eligible for Small Business Rate Relief, which I finally got around to applying for last week.

And it's not even really a business.

I don't go down there very much, I've transferred most of the bills into the name of the bloke who uses the premises the most (it's a music studio and i have a day job now).

Except this one. Gah

Just call and pay and apologise. They have plenty of better things to do than make an example of you.

that's what I"m hoping! the summons offered me the chance to pay the £400 bill plus £100 in admin for the cost of about 3 stamps. If I can get away with just paying that tomorrow I'll be somewhat relieved and will stop slapping my forehead quite so vigorously...

Not really the same in many ways but I got a bill for £300 for not advising the DVLA of a change of vehicle ownership and not appearing in court - said vehicle was an old CG125 I'd registered SORN, couldn't get running and given to a chap at work who wanted a field bike. Some years later he must have got it on the road but I'd moved a couple of times by then so it was a while before it all caught up - had to appear before magistrates, told the truth and ended up with something like a thirty quid fine.

Sorry - why did I tell you all that?

phoned up, paid, will probably get the bulk of it back when they eventually process my SBRR application.

And with that, this epic, gripping thrill-ride of a thread must draw to a close.

(and thanks pondo, that was actually a bit reassuring to read last night while i was brushing my teeth)
