Is it legal to drive a 16 seat mini bus with seats removed in the back to make it a 9 seater on a car license??

Depends on the reason you are driving it.

For "hire or reward" then no.

For personal use, then yes.

(If you are over 21 and been holding a full license for over two years)

Depends when you passed your test and mainly if you are doing it as an essential part of your job...

I'm afraid it's a no then.

Not allowed for hire or reward.

You need a proper minibus license.

Taking seats out doesn't change the class of the vehicle unless it's permanent and you get reclassified.

Unless you have an entitlement on your licence for the class of vehicle you're driving then it's a no.

simon g's right you could take all the seats out but it would still be a 16 seat mini bus in the eyes of the law..

9 seats? Do you mean 8 + driver? 9 passenger seats is still a minibus

It's all here in some detail (p16 for your question)

There's a newer version of the guide so you might want to Google that

You can get additional classes on your licence, buy taking a test.

As above, still a bus until reclassified. A standard twin wheel 16 seater Transit is 4.25 tonnes as well so, even if reclassified, would require a Cat C1 medium goods rather than Cat B car licence.

I think that you just get the 4.25T bit downgraded to 3.5T max by replacing the manufacturer's plate with a "ministry" plate. No changes to the vehicle needed though

Surely it's simpler just to do a three-day D1 course (shared with two others) and pass the various exams and tests
