My 2016 mini cooper needs a new battery, apparently it needs to be registered to the bms. Can anyone please recommend a gizmo I can use to do this?

I have a 2015 and it's on its second after market battery without being registered...I have not heard of it being required.

Coincidentally I was just discussing this with one of my work colleagues this morning. He is looking at Carly or Bimmerlink. BMW wanted £400 to change the battery, which costs about £120 from an autofactor plus £80 for the ODB tool which is likely useful for other stuff too.

You will need access to a high end diagnostic tool to do this as far as I'm aware. I can do it if you are local to me (Wye Valley), but as others have said, just stick a quality battery in -  Bosch or Varta for example.

As Ttew suggests, a cheap Bluetooth OBD2 tool and the Bimmerlink app should sort you out.  Bimmerlink app will cost you £40, you can get a BT OBD tool for less than £20 from Amazon or similar.  The app is useful for all sorts of other stuff too - I've just had the two foglamps in the bumper replaced on my son's R56 Mini as the old ones were knackered, put new LED ones in and of course there's an error on the dash for the different voltage, fire up the app and job jobbed.

Potentially could degrade the life of your battery, if you car has IBS 😀

If you're replacing like-for-like (same capacity & type), then its BimmerLink you need.

Only need BimmerCode if you're changing the battery type or capacity.

I've not had to replace the battery on my similar age MINI, but I do use BimmerLink via this adaptor and it works perfectly (Veepeak OBDCheck BLE+ Bluetooth OBD II Scanner Car EOBD Engine Code Reader Auto Wireless Diagnostic Scan Tool for iOS & Android - via Amazon, £40, if the embedded link doesn't work).
