we've caved and let my lad have Minecraft on my ps4, but other than walking round mining dirt and trees and clobbering sheep we've not got much going on.
Any best first steps?

Ditch it and get Fornite
Our lad never ‘got’ Minecraft.
Find stampylongnose on YouTube and watch his videos on how to do stuff, my son watched an unhealthy amount of them, he's moved onto Fortnite but still revisits Minecraft.
Just realised that's for XBox - but he's the Yoda of Minecraft. He does PS4 stuff too.
Oh - and those annoying videos have made him $14 million !!!!!!
how old is he? theres 2 versions of minecraft, survival and creative. survival is where you have all the bad guys coming and going and you'll need a shelter built for the first night creative is no bad guys and you can just add materials to your inventory without having to find them so if hes new to it let him play creative for a while and build stuff. I used to love playing it with the kids to see what theyd make, some of the houses were huge and really well designed.
oh and in creative you can fly with a quick double jump so you can find a nice spot to build on easier 🙂
Exploring cave networks on survival mode is diverting. Once he has built a basic house to sleep in, he can learn how to make stuff like weapons, torches etc and see how far he can get.
Mine!
Then craft!
As said above, let them play in creative, if you want to be nice start a survival world and mine loads for them.
Carry a bucket of water to use as a lift down, try to find carrots/potatoes to make a farm at home. Put torches everywhere and Google how to make spiderproof walls. Make lots of double chests to keep everything!
Long term you'll want to get to the nether.
+1 for YouTube videos, tho they do watch them all the time tho & some of the 'tubers are irritating !
Mojang do some good books , there's way more to it than just bashing blocks
Redstone circuits add an extra layer of complexity.
We got the guide series of books for a few quid each in b&m
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Minecraft-Guide-Survival-Mojang-AB/dp/140529650X/ref=mp_s_a_1_14?
You can also join in & do some 2 player & see what you can create !
Get someone near his age with experience to show him how to play.
One son is into Minecraft, and my younger son is into Fortnite.
The great thing about Minecraft, for us at least, is just how chilled they are playing it. Mostly they are just building (pretty epic) buildings and features in creative.
Fortnite, on the other hand, certainly gets the adrenaline going - I've seen some pretty excited behaviour off the back of it and it needs keeping in check.
DanTDM and Prestonplays on Youtube are valuable resources for Minecraft. Stampy's language can be mildly fruity, depending on how old your kids are, and he has THE most annoying laugh so he's banned in our house...
Iballisticsquid is my #1 Minecraft YouTube - genuinely funny and much cleaner than stampylongnose.
Started as a mate of stampylongnose but now I'd rate him higher.
