The last console I had was a SNES, I am so out of the loop.
I bought my kids a XBOX 360 last year, thinking if they get into it I'd buy them a XBOX 1. They are into it but mainly Minecraft which they also play a free education version of on our laptop.
They want an XBOX X when it comes out (and are saving for it) but I'm wondering if a gaming cpu would be better?
Also a really simple question but can you only play online with friends if you are all on the same console?
Minecraft is cross platform play now, so your kids can play with friends on other consoles or even pcs.
Console or pc for gaming seems like one of those perennial questions, guess it depends on the games you like. My 12yo son plays Minecraft (bedrock) on both pc and Xbox and reckons there's not much in it.
For minecraft specifically something to consider is if your kids are the type that will end up wanting to modify the game. There are load and loads of mods that others have made and (as far as I can tell) these are only really available in the PC version of the game.
Yeh we have it on Switch, PS4 and iPad. He only really plays it on the switch now though. He plays with his cousins who are using iPad so there are no problems with cross comparability. As above if you want to mod it you need the pc version. There are some mods for the cob soles but hard to implement and don’t work very well. Check out stamplonghead and ballistic squid on YouTube for vids on it that kids seem to love!
Minecraft has been great during lockdown for us as it has allowed me to Zwift whilst he has an hour on that and the wife can read. Without being able to do it out individual hobbies outside the house has helped him to be creative and to keep in touch with his cousins.
That is useful info re compatability and modding- thanks!
Are any other games cross compatible?
I'm kind of leaning to the PC as perhaps it could be a way into coding for them.
A few games (fortnite, call of duty) have cross compatibility network play with other systems but it isn't the norm. Don't know if there is more between xbox and pc as I am a ps4 owner.
Xbox and PC lines are going to become more and more blurred as time goes on IMO.
Personally I'd say PC if they're only playing Minecraft and you don't have a 4K TV.
Yep PC I think as well, with a decent sized monitor.
You don't even need a monitor if you cast or connect it to the TV, a RPi will run as a Steam box quite happily.

A gaming PC will be "better" than a console. It will however also be three times the price.
