Anyone else do this? I'm just starting to explore it & wondered what experience others had had - how did you start, how long did it take you to really feel like you'd got it, how often do you do it, what difference has it made etc.
Any thoughts? ( 😉 )
Yes, I did it when I lived in London and was rather introspective. I found it very enjoyable and beneficial in my day to day life. I went along once a week to the School of Economic Science, whose ads for this are plastered all over the Underground. I've since discovered that they are a bit cultish, so beware!
Thirty years later I still don't regret doing the course as I feel it contributed to my wholeness as a person, especially coming, as I've said, when I was at the start of my career and my life as a working adult and needed to sort out some ideas on life.
However I think I've benefited much more in the intervening years from overseas travel, as that broadens and opens the mind more than anything else. During those years I've met some people with admirable qualities who have been influential on my ideas and my behaviour.
Yeah been to one guided meditation and used the Headspace app a fair bit. It's been really helpful at times but I need to try and get back into it.
It's been on my To Do list for 5 years, but never got my act together and done anything about it....
Every solo ride I get to a place where my mind is clear with generally happy thoughts, but nothing guided like you mention.
I've been meditating since I was a teenager, and in my twenties spent a good 3 years on retreat(a whole other story). Now pushing 40 with three kids, I still practice and it keeps me sane. I had a massive breakdown about 6 years ago and decided that meditation, diet and riding were going to be my meds despite the docs wanting me on all sorts. Well, despite some tough months I managed to 're balance' things, plus be conscious of the process, thus learning a bit more about myself in the process(I did make sure I had a reflective mentor). Touch wood things are still good. Lucky for me I had a teacher since childhood which helps. My Asian family are priests so meditation is a normal activity.
No experience myself but my brother has studied and practiced mindfulness for many years. He now runs courses which take people into the mountains in Snowdonia and combine mindful meditation training with walking and wild camping. www.wildernessminds.co.uk
