You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
My wife's grandad was in the RAF in WW2. We'd like to find out a bit more about what he did and where but we've got limited information available - name, location, rough dates. Don't have regiment, rank, number or anything like that.
Anyone out there done a search like this? How can I start to do a search? Are there any free/low cost ways that will get me the information?
Try london gazette. The best place is manning and records in Glasgow but I'm not sure if they'll be able to help without name, rank and number.
Might be worth trying the British Legion. You really need to track don=wn his number to be able to access most of the official records. Once you get that though they are really helpful. We got my wife's father's medals within a couple of months of starting.
Tracking down the people he served with is where you will get the details rather than raw information though. Be prepared for hard work, dead ends (literally) and disappointments.
Document everything you try, everything you find, everything that works and everything that fails. Share this with both families. You will not be the only people interested and others may benefit from what you have done, even if it just saves then pursuing the same dead ends.
