Ryanair flights to Bergamo are on a good price at the minute, (I know its a fair way but you cxan get cheap transfers) so fancied a long weekend soaking up the nightlife and drinking italian coffee.
Not as simple as it seems though! Anybody know what region is best for the swish italian nightlife where all the hustke and bustle is? Don't even seem to be able to find any photo's of expensive posh looking italian streets there!
Any help is appreciated

Bump!
milan is not an attractive city and I don't think I would go back. It's a bit like london without the nice looking stuff and parks.
Bergamo is lovely though, I would happily go back there for a weekend

Not the iconic fashion centre with s****y bars and cafes then
We have Milanese friends in London, much as they are proud Italians they really dont miss Milan. Am sure it has it's nice parts but it isnt Rome.

I havent been but this sounds about right.
Can't really say much about Milan, but Bergamo is quite nice. The upper city (La Citta Alta) is very nice, but not that lively. You are only a couple or hours from some good skiing or the lakes, too.
Spent a few days in Milan and really enjoyed it. No, it's not Rome, and there are fewer postcard-friendly locations, but there are loads of cultural things to look at e.g., brilliant shops and restaurants, interesting quaint areas e.g..
I like Milan. Plus, I Personally find the Milanese (sp?) far nicer than the Romans.
Di Vinci Last Supper is in Milan.
Just don't eat within site of the Doumo, €150 for 5 salads!
bergamo is alovely place not very big but enough for a weekend away
get yourself to the lakes (ive flown into bergamo to get to garda among others) Lovely 🙂
Another "milans not all it's cracked upto be" pundit here. Spent some time in Milan, it's a bit rough around the edges, born to survive masses of people, builtwith little heritage and little remaining. Head for the Old Town (as said) where you'll find the lovlies of the world miander, few eat/drink there, even the Italians, prefering to stay local where they know each other.
Sorry, but it's a bit like Southampton without the River/Sea close by.
LOL.Sorry, but it's a bit like Southampton without the River/Sea close by.
i wasn't sold on milan. but i did visit as a student and we tended to move in groups of 10+, being half cut and speaking little italian. hence thinking i need to give it another chance. having said that there are lots of places that need a first chance.
Milan is fine. Nice restaurants by the canal, bar basso by the big roundabout though that is better in the summer.
Cool flea market at the end of the yellow?? subway line.
Duomo, Last supper painting!
There is all that fashion if that's your thing, although I think London is perhaps better at that.
People are friendly, nice snack food and bruschetta.
My favourite place Achille Castiglioni house, you can visit plus it's not to far from the design museum if I recall correctly.
Bergamo is lovely - a great destination for a weekend away.
doesn't sound encouraging!
I guess it's fair to say as a young group, we are going to relax, sit around drinking coffee in the day, and party throughout the night, whir leads me to the navigili district?
Is there still in atmosphere in January, or will i find everywhere closed and nobody to be seen?
Erm, I found the nightlife a bit disappointing to be honest. Restaurants were pretty good but people seemed a bit reserved.
I lived in northern Italy about 10 years ago, just for a year. I spent my weekends in Torino or Milano.
Both are pretty rough and ready "working" cities in comparison to the more touristy areas of Italy.
I'd compare them to the likes of Leeds or Manchester (having also lived in both of those for years), since they're not really very awe inspiring for a weekend visitor, but the longer you spend there and get under the skin of the city, the more you love it for what it is and become part of the "real" city scene.
You've got to work to find those little places that seem to flourish without any kind of fanfare or marketing, or pictures of food outside the restaurant on a board.
One tip. Don't wind up the carabinieri when you are drunk. I was hit with a baton/belt/back of hand no less then 6 times when i lived there (although admittedly not in the bigger cities) 🙂
Discussion today and we've decided on Rome! A nicer city i think and hopefully busier.
Does anybody know if there will be much nightlife at all in Rome early January?
Dont want to et there and find empty pubs and discoteque's!
I went to Rome in Feb, there was nothing going on in the evening other than eating. Aparth from a club called Cica Cica Boom - DO NOT GO THERE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. No matter how drunk you are.
What about Amterdam, do you think it'll be any good for going out in the evenings?
