Unquestionably one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. Going to be interesting to see how Russia responds, I can't imagine Putin wanting to put on a big state funeral. Also, not sure that young people in the West today realize how major a figure he was 30 years ago.

I can't imagine the Russian people wanting a big state funeral for Gorbachev. Opinion polls for years have shown that Gorbachev was deeply unpopular with the Russian people. More recent ones have shown that he was even less popular than Stalin.

Will always be known for banging his shoes on the table

That was Nikita Khrushchev at the United Nations General Assembly.

I'm a little surprised he supported the annexation of Crimea. He was no fan of Putin though.

Overall, he lead a good life and tried to do good by others.

The world was a safer place, in part due to him. Only for a while sadly.

You should point that out to Coach Letterman.

Didn't he feature in a Specialized advert in the early 90's? 😉

My first thought whenever I heard his name over the years.

He’s certainly not well thought of in Russia, for destroying the Russian Empire, and encouraging the murdering West…

No state funeral and Putin won't be going as he is busy that day. Says it all really.
At least gorby was looking forward for the Russian people.

The Russian people have never appeared particularly grateful to Gorbachev, in the 1996 Russian Presidential elections he only received 0.5% of the vote. I believe that he might have become even less popular in recent times.

Putin announcing a state funeral for Gorbachev would be unlikely to go down well.

Putin expressing any praise for Gorbachev, which he has done publicly, is actually more surprising to me than the announcement of no state funeral.

I was always very impressed that they managed to get Colonel Von Strohm from Allo Allo in that Pizza Hut advert. Real star value.
