Just had a look at the leader board of the 2013 Tour Divide http://trackleaders.com/tourdivide13 and see that Mike Hall the British guy who cycled around the world in 91 days is leading.

According to spot tracker he has already ridden over 200 miles in 15 hours!

he is currently riding with craig stappler so technically they are both in the lead 😉

I stand corrected. The live tracker does not show Craig Stapler, maybe he does not have a spot tracker

it does

it just shows mike on top of him , you have to zoom right in to see the two of them

i only know because i was watching them ride together(ish) craig seeming to ride away from mike at some points ..... im curious as although both have pedigree - i dont really know craigs back ground but i know mike can get up again tomorrow and knock out the same pace- and the next day - and the next day.....

I stand corrected (again!) If he keeps doing 200 mile days he will smash the current record. These guys are just machines

James Olsen (jameso on here) is currently 15th. It's early days yet so it could all change.

I reckon he's bonked. Not been consuming his energy gels at the right intervals. Classic rookie error

its a spot quirk , hes still leading with Craig - and about 40-50 miles up on JPs record atm .

I was hoping a bear was involved, he'd fought it off with an aggressively wielded tyre lever and he is now back on the chase.

Not really a rookie, is he?

Stappy also seems to have a good lead over Mike now.

ah yes its opened up since i last looked - theres a 10 mile gap now. maybe it was less of a spot glitch than i thought - as they bothe refreshed at a similar time this time.

I reckon mike has got fed up of him hanging off him, he will drop back and let him think he has the better of him and in a couple of days time do a 400 mile stint and blow him apart!

He will be bored of small talk, he's there to race, not socialise, 10 miles isn't much and mike doesn't need much sleep, in fact he perfected sleep riding on the nullabor last year!

Just last week finished reading Eat, Sleep, Ride. - cracking read - will be following the progress with interest.

interesting theory bland - it might just work ;)i could see him getting up mega early again - i doubt craig would have bothered to go at 3am if mike hadnt .... mike will just be wanting to race his own race at his pace not craigs.

I am keeping a close eye on JamesO of this forum (currently in 10th). For no other reason than that I've had a lot of correspondence with him, swapped notes on some trips and know that he's a really good, nice, bloke.

Good luck James

C

Just googled this. Are they really self supported? How the hell are they carrying all the kit they need?

How the hell are they carrying all the kit they need?

they can buy food and any spares from 'regular shops' along the route so they're self sufficient rather than self supported might be a better way of putting it. They can setup caches in advance, though.

If you look at the link above you can see the kit that one racer is carrying.

but they were allowed (not sure if they still can) post stuff to POboxes along the way.

The idea is to carry virtually nothing, read mike halls blog! A urging you carry weighs you down so basically you ride, eat and sleep for a few hours! No change of clothes etc, just a tiny tent and sleeping bag and a few spares

read about the kit he carries, impressivly little, didn't see much about how much food he needs to carry with him for 200 miles per day - that must be a lot, plus you can't guarantee the food you want is at the next place... I can't see him popping into the local supermarket for powerbars at the end of each days 200 miles?

Proper epic adventure!

I think they do a fair bit of that, not powerbars but high energy dense food like peanut butter. Also they eat at cafes and sleep in motels etc when possible.

Don't forget mike sustained 200 miles per day for 92 days last year!

He is only 97% titanium now, he lost the other 2% when he had his pain barrier removed!

I just realised, I sold James some of my old bikepacking kit last year. I hope he is using it for the race 😀

im either imagining it or the reason that Craigs so far ahead of mike is that he did not sleep at all last night he just kept going by the looks of it ......

hes got a good lead over mike but he will have to stop at some point.

It's not looking good for Mike at the moment, from twitter;

Another rough day & night in real trouble with breathing. Nearly scratched last night. Suspect allergy of some kind. Experimenting with meds

who knew watching blue dots on a screen could be so exciting. I watched MH reduce the gap to the point they would be able to see each other. Now CS has pulled away a bit.

Will race tactics make one stop in Pinedale and the other try and push through?

i prefer the other thread, this one gives MH the lead from the title, which i think is a bit wrong.

Has Mike scratched? Jesse Carlsson is showing as race leader. 🙁

Or is it just a tracking glitch because he is off route on a diversion?

Nah - he's on the official detour. He'll pop up in first place when he gets close to Silver City.

What a time. Under 15 days is just amazing. Congrats to him!

Real shame that his record time will not count officially for the course record, but I suspect in the world of TD racing, everyone, will remember his cracking time is the real one to beat
