[Closed] Migraine after using PC monitor

Mrs S has been developing frequent migraines after using her PC at work, she spends quite a bit of cumulative time on screen but with very frequent breaks. She had an eye check in February and nothing wrong with her prescription. Recently had a 3 week break from work with no migraine, back to work and migraine most days so almost certainly screen related.

Had anyone had any success with blue LED or glare reduction type glasses or got any other ideas?

You can use software to reduce the amount of blue light. eg Windows 10 has a built in "night light" mode. Or try F.lux, it has more options for tweaking colours and brightness.

Also could check the screen refresh rate. That could be causing it to flicker.
Or could be an issue with the office lighting. A lot of LED lightbulbs have a noticeable flicker.

Workstation set up correctly? i.e. top of monitors level with eyes etc.

Any chance its something else? i.e. did she reduce caffeine consumption or eat healthier whilst off work? Work stress? Does she spent a lot of time on the phone?

I had 2 or 3 prescriptions with various combos of reading, distance and varifocal before they found I need a prism. Basically my eyes don't point to the same location. Gave crazy bad headaches and was like a switch when I got the prism done. Even dropped the reading part. Damn those varifocals messed with my head.

I used to get bad headaches. New monitor at higher refresh rate and new glasses with a blue filter seem to have fixed it.
Could have been the glasses or monitor or very slight change in prescription!

Screen too bright/dark compared to background?
Not drinking enough water?
Play with colour/temperature settings on monitor.
I'm not sure refresh rate makes much of a difference on LCD screens; I could notice 60Hz vs 75Hz on CRT, but I don't think I can on LCD. Worth a shot though.

+1 for check the monitor settings. Digital connection? Check that the Windows screen resolution matches the native resolution of the monitor. Otherwise Windows will scale it which can leave text slightly fuzzy and tiring to read.

Also, is it just a crap monitor?

I’ve bought my own monitor in the past, because I wanted something better than work were offering me. Blue light reduction and a proper black level and contrast matter if you spend all day reading text.

Do you think it is definitely the screen and not something else? Possibly stress, has anything changed with her job?

I say this as after changing jobs about 6 years ago I started suffering with regular migraines. Thought it was due to using computers more often than previously role. For 5 years I struggled with them, tried changing screen settings, stopped drinking caffeine, made sure I drank plenty of water and tried taking regular breaks from screen time, but still had them.

Changed jobs nearly a year ago and now spend all day sat at computer, but never had another migraine since (hope I haven't jinxed myself). Think it was the stress of the job that caused mine. I'm much happier in my new job and it is less stressful.

Check sitting position. Migraines can be neck or upper spine related.

Computer setup might not be only reason but it is easy fix, just found out that one client corporation still uses VGA-cables to connect laptop docks to 24" monitors and run them on wrong resolution.

Migraine or bad headache? A migraine is not something you could deal with on a recurring daily basis IME. Not trying to be a dick, but implications and cause may be different.

My wife got loads after adjusting her monitor down to accommodate a webcam on the top. Monitor back up to the right place, no more migranes.

Interesting, she had a webcam fitted a few months ago, this is worth looking at
Her PC is windows 7 so no in built blue light filter, She has two screens, at least one of them is pretty decent so I'll get her to rummage and see if the the screen itself has blue light adjustment.

Joined primarily to comment on this (but also after a gravel bike!)

I had similar issues at work for a number of months, I went to the opticians and all fine but they suggested blue light may be an issue.

The easiest way to solve this is to go on the colour settings for your screen and reduce the blue light down significantly - I tend to do it to about half of the others. This made a huge difference to my experience at work, I went from a migraine a day to nothing for over a year.

You can do similar on iPhones etc by enabling night more permanently also 👍🏽

DSE Regs, if you use multiple screens the monitors should be the same size/image quality.
