Morgan, good choice. I'm 42 and feeling the need to return to an 80's hothatch/group b rally car (have a bit more money these days) 🙂

Ive found some realy nice deseamed hot hatches very 80's. I would go mad for a mk1 xr2 if it came up at the right price.

If I were having another crisis, I'd be putting my hand in my pocket for this.

Nice, but I raise you the Mk1 that's in the fast and furious 6 film. Seen the trailer this week and wanted it. If I knew how to post pictures on ths ipad I'd put it up, but you'll have to google it.

I'd say the 4 door Mk2 1600 Sport I had was the rarest and the lustierest.

We will all be disapointed when they have it dubbed to sound like a jap car that has 27 forward gears a turbo and a dump valve ..... Instead of the distinctive bwwapp bwaaap bwapppp pulsing throttle as the driver fights using his skill to keep it out of the hedge.

I just flogged my Impreza STI, great fun in this weather ......... But I never seemed to be able to wrestle it of my wife.

Good mid life crisis car and cheaper than a Porsche

T4 2.5tdi.
-tinted
-lowered
-some ridiculous new rims (I saw chrome spinners on one the other week!)
-remapped
-loud farty exhaust
-daft bonnet bra
-combi-van or camper interior.

(I have a totally stock/unmolested t4 caravelle but am only 35. A mate who is a lot closer to 40 seems to have the above plans for mine however...)

Make it a midlife crisi man-project vehicle which you can also cart your bikes and mates around in, for the same fuel and insurance costs as your midlife crisis Winkie substitute! Winner!

Morgan, good choice. I'm 42

morgans are great, really basic... but fun. the drive is like nothing else, the way the chassis pulls you into the apex of the bend. best bit is that in your 40s you are a super young morgan driver. i've had mine since being 42 or 43, i feel like a teenager in it compared to the usual owner.

Tsk tsk.

The Mk 2 was about THE ugliest golf ever.

Its Mk 1 or nothing.

I've always hankered after a Fiat Uno Turbo ie. Not sure why I think it's the word Turbo and because they look very functional and sort of ugly in a good way. Seem pretty rare of the bay though. Apparently they're are still made / recently been made in some country and original new spares are cheap and plentiful. Almost bought a Mk1 Black fiesta Super Sport as my first car. Still remember it vividly. Passed though. Seemed too immaculate in some areas and suspected it as being repaired heavily at the front end iirc.

Might be worth getting hold of a practical classics or retro rides magazine - would give you loads of ideas. My local Tescos stock both.

mk2 and mk1 escorts are great in theory but tbh I'd want to sink a fair chunk into one to get something sound although you may get lucky.

I am no expert but I guess early VW's are built to last and look great even in lesser forms with the correct treatment.I'd go for a mk2 golf most likely but I am sure other VW's are great too.

Might be worth looking at some of the 1980's/ 1990's jap hot hatches or coupes too if this is your chosen path.

Erm have you seen a Mk3?

However I would agree that the Mk1 is the golf to go for.

If you are also a good mechanic (which let's face it for all of the cars above you will have to be)...

Alfa 105 GT converted to GTAesque specification by Alfaholics with a 6 speed sequential gearbox, welded cage with polished finish, retro leather bucket seats, uprated suspension + brakes and a 225bhp engine for the lolz. Keeping the original GTA steering wheel and trim for the character and the body resprayed in a gorgeous deep shiny red. Nomnomnom

What's more....they are blisteringly quick when done up like this

Sierra / Saphire Cosworth. In black.
What a beast.

Lancia Delta Integrale was a bit of a tool also.

But given the choice...Mk1 1.8 Golf GTi.

Or a Mk2 Escort RS2000.

Choices choices... 😉

Definitely a Lancia Delta Integrale. Or even better a Lancia Stratos replica. I think the original ones are going for about a billion quid.

Clean straight Escort RS Turbo ?
1989ish MK4 . OK so not the fastest thing but it should appreciate in value and be usable on a daily basis .
If not and you are feeling flush an Escort Cosworth?

Aah the Sierra Cosworth. Those guys were great fun. Always up for a race.

Of course, as soon as it got twisty they disappeared. See also XR3i's. None of them any match for .....

[img] [/img]

Sort the brakes out, get a decent head and carb on it, some proper wheels and tyres and that thing was uncatchable. Awesome fun.

In all seriousness if I was having a MLC I would be looking at the following.

VW Corrado VR6
VW Golf Rallee
Vw Golf GTI MK1
Mazda RX7
Williams Renault Clio
Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9

Since my XR3i blew up I have wanted to modernise one, initially with a Mondeo engine and electrics with upgraded brakes etc. But with enough money who knows what you could shoehorn in it.

An MX5 might be on the list too but I'm not sure.

Used to be a bit of a Pug nut myself, had a 205GTi 1,9 and a 309 GTi with an Mi16 conversion. Both cracking cars, but the 309 handled better.

I'd love a Delta Integrale (genuine LH drive, natch) but at that price... 😯

oooh, an ex-gf had a mini like that - her dad's business was doing them up. Fast as a fast thing. We *ahem* may have attempted the quickest Pooley Bridge staff accommodation to Glenridding for work times (at 7am in morning).
The Mk2 Golf 16v was slowest, the 205 1.9 GTI next, but the mini was about 20seconds ahead...amazing thing.
*walks off speaking to himself about mis-spent youth and ex gf*

Ooo. I had a Peugeot 205 GTi. Great, great cars.

Loving some of those Alfa's too. No idea how they drive, but pretty cars.

EDIT:
For me, the 205 wasn't about out right speed, they'd rev-out in top gear !.
The beauty of the 205 was the handling, lithe, responsive, great to drive.
A car you could feel working.

Just reporting in. Feeling pleased with myself. Alfa 159 has done almost a 1000 miles in 4 days of ownership and its brill. Noise and that grill is just so sexy. Not a break down in sight. Its a real adventure.....
