You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I know lower back pain is more normal but about 5 weeks ago helped out with a trail maintenance day.
Attacked it with my usual vim and vigour and towards the end ended up transporting a good few wheelbarrows worth of hardcore about half a mile through woodsy singletrack.
At the time my arms and legs were sore but not my back. The next morning though I had sore muscles either side of my spine round about my shoulder blades.. Used some brufen cream for a coupla days including at work, but the pain wasnt really going away. If anything, would get worse if it had been a busy night at work.
After 5 weeks the muscular pain either side of my spine isn't too bad but now I'm getting pains in my back itself- feels like I've been punched in the spine.
Kinda sore all the time, feels a bit like it really needs to crack (which it does when I'm doing the stretches that I thought would help), especially when I'm having to pick up my 2 year old, never mind patients.
I'm gonna be getting in touch with occupational health when I'm back at work after the weekend but am starting to get worried that I've actually done some damage now!
Anyone had the same problem?how did you sort it out? Rolling over in bed is sore, riding my bike is sore, I'm not happy!!
My sympathy; now that I'm 55 and the testosterone levels are down to almost zero I find that the only muscles with any power are the cycling ones. The others ache like hell and get damaged easily if I make any use of them.
My usual remedy is hot baths, a couple of days of Ibuprofen (it constipates me) and gentle stretching. I went along for a yoga class and found that really beneficial; after a good controlled stretching session the last lot of pain (lower back, each side of the spine from gardening) had gone.
Failing that a couple of sessions with a physio can help though it has to be in a warm room; my usual physio has a freezing treatment room so I've stopped using him.
Ouch- I'm only 37... That didn't make me feel much better!
Seriously, ta though. Deffo getting onto Occy health first thing on Monday..
Go and see a Chiropractor
In Spain these days when you get prescribed Ibuprofen they give you stomach protection pills as well. The dosages are higher here 400mg to 600mg tablets. But worth a thought if you are taking it for a few days or more.. bleeding guts cant be nice.
Cant really help with your back pain, maybe a trapped nerve? get it checked out by a doc. but tbh, they probably just prescribe drugs and maybe physio.
Cycling whilst good cardio exercise isnt particularly good for all your muscle groups or bone density as you age, so definitley worth putting in some strength work or circuits once a week to strengthen your core and main muscle groups once you fixed your back.
no reason that you cant be strong and healthy at 37 or 55 if you look after yourself.
