Isn't it embarrassing when someone holds their hand up, expecting you to give them a high five? I'm a 48 year old Englishman for God's sake, I don't want to act like a Californian teenager, but it seems so rude to just ignore it. I generally give a rather pathetic, half-hearted high five back, if it's someone I know really well a withering look will suffice, but then the likelihood of someone I know well offering me a high five is pretty remote.

Oh the travails of the modern world.

got a "fist bump" when I went to shake a m8's hand the other day, we switched and just ended up confused. I should have just stuck my hand out, ffs were over 40, not gangsters

Agree fully, the only time I do high 5's is with the kids where I pull my hand back and tell em there are too slow....to a 4 year old it's a bit of fun....grown men....I'd have to give someone the "look" if they tried such a thing....

...I don't even like those silly hand shakes where your fingers are pointing upwards....anyone tries one of those I go in higher with my fingers pointing downwards and bring their hand into the correct grown ups method of shaking hands...

If anyone goes for that, continue with your hand in the shaking hands position and then tell them that paper beats rock.

So is teaching my 18month old son to high five and fist bump the wrong thing to do?

Our old King Charles Spaniel's only trick was to give you a high five.

I always deal with that by going "HIGH FIIIIIIIIVE" in a silly voice. No ambiguity.

I did a 100% genuine fistbump with a random stranger once at the bottom of a trail. It was just the right thing to do at the time. Will probably never do it again though.
