Mrs FD has been offered a new job which means moving house to a new region.
I have been in Finance/Accountancy since graduating, and in the NHS for the last 10 years. I will need to look for a new job when we move however Mrs FD salary will cover what I currently pay in to the pot.
So in a sense the world is my Oyster and I can choose a career.
However that sounds straight forward but
1. I have no idea what ideally I would like to do.
2. Where do you actually look for jobs these days?
When I was made redundant 15 years ago I genuinely looked at getting in to dry stone walling, but ended up back in Finance. I half like the idea of doing a deliver driver job for Sainsbury/Ocado etc.
The only caveat to all this is that it needs to be part time, and it appears to be easier to get full time hours and negotiate hours down, than trying to find part time jobs
Any ideas?

For anything start with a list...
Can you freelance at what you are doing? Having a fall back of what you know is a great way to feel a bit more free when your making a big step.
How much can you afford to fund a change?
Whats the job market like where you are heading?
Whats the honest conversation with Mrs FD about you doing something different and not bringing in as much cash?
We might be doing something similar in the next two or three years; once the Little Lady qualifies her salary will jump pretty spectacularly, and we will probably move North s property prices will be lower, so I wont need to earn as much.
I quite fancy being a postie.
reed.co.uk is a good site.
If you're after part time hours you could get a job where you drive cars around the country, like delivering new lease pcp cars to their new owners and you get the train back. You only get paid for the jobs you do and you take as many or as little as you like. I forget the name of the company but my mate used to do it let me message him and ask.
I have sent you a private message ..which may have some interest in terms of what you are looking for ..
I'm awaiting my formal redundancy notice at 53 after 16 years with the same employer / 18 years in the same sector - fortunately I'll leave with a decent package and with no mortgage, we'll have enough money to live on for 18 months. I'm looking to set-up my own small business to give enough of an income to see me to my retirement and beyond. Whilst daunting, I'm more excited than worried - after the piles of corporate BS I've been facing in recent years I'll be glad to be in control of my own destiny, not some accountant's pen / Government policy flip-flop and I know my mental and physical health will improve considerably. There's plenty of interim / temporary work anyway if it doesn't work out.
NHS contracting? People who understand the money side are always needed.

So did I, until I did it. ****ing shit it was!

Jekkyl - this sounds like the thing I could be interested in...post up the details when you have them - cheers!
There's someone on here that does that for a job.
here you go Glenn: http://www.cevl.co.uk/contact-us/
I think there are various companies, this one is based in Shrewsbury.

Simply chant in a Candyman style "DuckDuckGo", and he shall appear.
Cheers Simon Semtex reading through their stuff now.
My current "career" is coming towards a natural end point (company/product im specialist in going down tubes )
Looking forward to a new challenge and spending much less time on here..... Just conscious that many of the options mentioned on here that I've looked at my self are jobs not careers --if that makes sense.
I've applied to things like sse apprentice and trainee engineer schemes (don't expect it to go anywhere as I'm already a grad in mech Eng, but most definantly more of a hands on dirty hands rather than theoretical sitting in the office) and various other entry level positions -- bt openreach engineer , Scottish water, trainee geotechnical driller .....
Let's see where we go. .
Contracting in finance, unless you really do feel like a change of career..
What you have got is a very good understanding of formal business and finance, it would be a shame to release that but if you do then maybe a complete change of career is in order.
Best of luck.
I found reed.com to just be full of agencies after a quota of cv's to pass on. Indeed seem to have advertisments from employers.

Thanks jekkyl 🙂
Whatever it is that you've been wishing you had done instead of your current job when you've been hating what you're doing and daydreaming about a better life!
Easier said than done shermer.
Thanks all some good stuff to explore.
The reason for part time is that I have to be there to do childcare before and after school.
When you have been in a box for a long time, thinking outside the box is the difficult bit !
There's plenty of part time postie jobs around, the turnover of newcomers is high, you could work three full days or five partial days for approx 22.5 hours a week.
The first few weeks are often hell, so if you make it through a couple of months, your stamina will improve.
Overtime is optional and more than likely, there will be overtime available! Not a bad pay rate for unskilled work, once you have been there a year.

Now how does consulting and contracting sound...
What do people get brought in for at your work? Flexible work from home hours doing your old job for more cash.
Either that or I hear you can make money with a web cam...
Or how about starting a mountain bike forum?
