My daughter is about to start her Masters degree and had been paying £7 a month or so for Word on her Mac.
Sadly, she has also been made redundant from her part time job so she is counting every penny even more now.
Are there any other sources of Word available that are free or even cheaper than £7 per month?
She had Spotify, Netflix and a few other monthly subscriptions that she’s going to have to cancel. This is just another ‘tightening of the belt’ exercise.

Just use Apache Open Office.

If she's a student, she may well be able to get it free. Hang on...

It might be worth checking to see if she eligible for a student license of Office, the online version of Word is free to use if not.

Here you go

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/education/Products/office

Or, if she's happy to do all of her stuff online, the online version of Word (and excel and powerpoint) is free anyway. And really good.

Can she not get MS Word for free through her institution?

What is she writing ?

Open Office is very good but lacks the functionality of MS Word for some things. If she is writing a complex thesis I would stick with MS Word, but dump it if not.

Most people just scratch the surface of what MS Word (and Excel) can actually do.

As others have said, it's free if you sign up with a .ac.uk email address.

Which is another good reason why the online versions are fine for most people

As above, check with the institution to see what software they provide for students. If you are writing a thesis, you really need to use a reference manager like Endnote, which the school will probably provide. That works as a plug-in for MS Word. No idea how compatible it is with Open Office, but Endnote is a massive time saver. Also, depending on the degree, there may be other niche software that is required and may require MS Office for full functionality. For example, I use some analytic software that used Excel to create charts. It'll still run and export results without Excel, but the charts are extremely useful.

I just bought a stand alone (Windows) office pro 2019 for £17 from CJS CD Keys, yesterday and received the key directly (Hmm mac version is more expenisve and that cheap 5 license wasn't available yesterday).. it registered without issue. Whether they'll be any long term issues I dunno but it was better than my proper hooky copy of office 2010

Thanks for the info. Her uni is BIMM so not an ac.uk address and no free access to Microsoft. I’m sure she can manage for now with a reduced access version.
Thanks again.
Nearly forgot. Music Management.

I use Libre Office which is free but sounds like MS office would be better for her uni work.

Endnote I think works with Open Office, as does Zotero which I use (and recommend) for references.
