You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Pretty clever, how long would it take to process an hour long video into a timelapse one that is nice and smooth?
Depends on the size of your processor dunnit?
I thought this was going to be a piss take but I really like that, imagine being able to swoop down some sinewy singletrack at high speed 🙂
Even better if you could influence the direction so it could pan right slightly to look at the view or if you have been chatting to a mate it could use the frames where you looked over to them to get a sideways view.
That's super clever. After watching the second video I'm thinking/hoping an ESPER photo analysis machine can't be that far off? Could have it by 2019 in fact 😉
"pan right and pull back, stop"
Impressive stuff, makes everything look like you're flying along on a super smooth speeder bike.
Cooool!
Microsoft's image research labs come up with some pretty great stuff. Has anyone tried building panoramas using their ICE tool and associated photosynth publishing platform?
Some more demo stuff here:

err... still shitty though isn't it.
The rock climbing one reminds me of trying to play Magic Carpet on my old DX2 66, far too much visual processing going on. Nifty but doesn't seem to work to well when there's a lot of close up detail.
That is quite incredible. They are doing stuff that I would never have imagined was technically possible. It might not be even close to perfect but the software appears to be working out 3d shapes and surfaces from individual frames and then reconstructing them from a different viewpoint - amazing.
Reminds me of this
Interesting and clever stuff. The result is a bit "swoopy" for my taste but much more watchable than the naive timelapse.

Yep. There is a PhotoSynth app on iPhone* that I use a fair bit. It generally works very well.

And combining a number of frames together to fill in the missing bits when the camera orientation changes.
Agreed, amazing. (And I only understood 10% of it)
Now if they an get rid of the annoying GoPro clicking then THAT would be good.
But, in reality, real life just isn't "swoopy" and "clean" is it.
God help us when this gets released, the interwebs will be full of 16yr old Girls throwing iPhones in the air whilst giggling then publishing the shite.
However, I do see that it could come in useful for a GPS route tracking/following unit, save following a crappy Gray line eh.. 😆
Coupled with Google streetview you could potentially "drive" down any road.
Good stuff, I like it. I would imagine we'll see replicas everywhere pretty soon, it cannot be "patentable" I would imagine.

Yes, simple and worked perfectly.

Indeed. Google demo'd something similar about a year ago, not as smooth as the MS new offerings, but I would be very surprised if they hadn't refined the process somewhat.

Same bods involved in this project, worked on photosynth.
That Google video is brilliant.
speaking as a measurement geek, with some limited experience of large-volume scanning, that is seriously [s]interesting[/s] awesome!
